Health care has got to cost less in a country which lets everyone go to the
doctor. I won't go because I can't afford to be sick. So if I have cancer, I
won't find out until it's incurable and will cost a fortune to treat it.
Also I pay thopisnads of dollars a year intaxes but can't afford to go to a
dentist. My teeth are getting kind of bad, and the money to fix them goes to
the stinking rip-off swine who lobby the govt to get my tax money.

care system. The pharmaceutical companies are the biggest beneficiaries of
rotten health care. Wait till people are disabled by badly treated diseases

this does not detract from the criticism deservedly laid on the US
system.
I just think the positions tend to be simplistic, and so the remedies
tend to be inadequate. A big cultural change - a change in our
fundamental values -- is needed, and it is a change most Americans
don't want to make. One value we don't want to give up is the dream
that everyone can and should try to make it BIG TIME.

But some care needs to be given to how much thing are said to cost. I
was in Italy last year in a cultural learning program (which sounds
more high-tootin' than it was) and a speaker at one of our classes,
who lives in Rome, talking about the economy and politics of Italy,
said that the Italian health care system is "free". What a fantasy
that is. He could not answer my question of how the costs of health
care (physical facilities, salaries, supplies, etc. get paid for. But
this does not detract from the criticism deservedly laid on the US
system.
I just think the positions tend to be simplistic, and so the remedies
tend to be inadequate. A big cultural change - a change in our
fundamental values -- is needed, and it is a change most Americans
don't want to make. One value we don't want to give up is the dream
that everyone can and should try to make it BIG TIME.

Your speaker was almost and mostly right. Many health care system
features are free, some are not, anyway the system is way cheaper than
the US system, and Italians are actually having 2 years more of life
expectancy, which is pretty discomforting from the USian POW, if you
take in account the kind of technology US doctors have at their
disposal (more or less future tech of next decade, for Italians).
By the way, having life experience in Italy and abroad, I tend to focus
in one single point of divergence: in Italy the State assign everyone a
family doctor, that is, a first point of contact. If you have any kind
of pain, any kind of illness, any kind of health related worrying, your
first step is invariable that to visit your doctor's studio, he will
check you, will care you and will help you to understand and to decide,
everything without needing even to touch your wallet (it gives them a
lot of power too, many are turning politics earlier or later). He will
also decide if you have to take medicines or not. Without his consent,
you can't even buy most of pharmacs.
That said, most of the medicines aren't free (only life rescuing or
life substaining ones, for everyone), somewhat more expensive than in
Anglosaxon countries, there is not free market, there is nothing
something like a big drugstore, they are all small business Pharmacist
(and to open one you need to found one willing to sell you his license,
starting price around 1 millions Euro in villages, double in cities),
specialists are free only if you can wait (sometimes months), physical
facilities are often free even in private clinics (they get the money
from the State, and from the analysis), obviously not the better suits,
procedures are mostly free (or with some money covered from the State)
and so on.
Who pay for this? Everyone who works, from the first to the last. The
system is not that perfect either, mostly 'cause money is collected
from the State (think about the Federal government), who hands that
down to the Regions (US's States), who are spending those under the
control of the Ministry of Health (usually headed from a Doctor,
sometime, as in the case of Dott. Veronesi, one of the top oncologists
of the world), so Regions are ever trying to overspending, 'cause
health is #1 concern of electors (who close hospitals or raise medicine
price, lose elections) and noone wish to hear about modifying the
system; Italians will ever accept to pay more taxes if those money are
going to health ministry (and you can't say same for any other sector
of life and economy).
