Wiccan Pentacle joins manger at Olean, NY city Christmas display |
Just saw it on the 11 o'clock local news but out of area sources have
already picked up the story. The pentacle is huge...looks about seven
feet tall. Olean is about 60 miles south of Buffalo and is the support
community for the very Catholic St. Bonaventure University.
Here was the setup:

And the followup:

No photos online as of yet but I presume that there will be sometime
tomorrow.
Now I see that the fundies have all of a sudden embraced religious
neutrality in government when a display of a faith not to their liking
gets placed alongside theirs. I guess when they want more religion in
government they really mean only their religion.

<snork>
Now maybe they'll understand the genesis of the "wall of separation"
letter. It was written by Jefferson to *reassure* Baptists...

“It is often argued that religion is valuable because
it makes men good, but even if this were true it would
not be a proof that religion is true. That would be
an extension of pragmatism beyond endurance.
Santa Claus makes children good in precisely the same
way, and yet no one would argue seriously that the
fact proves his existence. The defense of religion is
full of such logical imbecilities.”

Of course. The Baptists only supported religious neutrality in
government when they weren't in political power. When they were in
political power as they were in the South starting in the late 1850s
and as they were nationally from 2001-2006, they have staunchly
supported increased religion in government as long as it is theirs and
theirs alone.
"We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various
States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by
the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African
race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully
held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that
condition only could their existence in this country be rendered
beneficial or tolerable. That in this free government all white men
are and of right ought to be entitled to equal civil and political
rights; that the servitude of the African race, as existing in these
States, is mutually beneficial to both bond and free, and is
abundantly authorized and justified by the experience of mankind, and
the revealed will of the Almighty Creator, as recognized by all
Christian nations." - Texas Ordinance of Secession, 2 February 1861,
stating the theological doctrine of the Southern Baptist Congress
(founded 1845) as the principal reason for leaving the United States.
