Wiccan US Soldier Killed in Afghanistan Gets no Memorial |

Just goes to show how the government *does* respect the establishment
of religion, doesn't it - as long as it's the right one.

Aaah, ain't that understandable? After all, a wiccan memorial would possibly
show the sheeple, err, people that there _are_ "atheists in
foxholes" (Okay, wicca != atheism of course, but go thee out and tell that
to the numbnuts!)... would ruin all that propaganda that keeps up a
semblance of democracy!

Actually the government does have a marker for atheists, the American
Atheist organizations logo:
http://www.cem.va.gov/cem/hm/hmemb.asp
but nothing for Wiccans. I think that the prejudice exists because many
still mistakenly believe that Wicca is all about black magic and devil
worship.

Actually when I'm dead, I wouldn't care what they put over me. As a
matter of fact, I don't even want a grave. Why take up valuable space?
My intention is to be cremated and have my ashes dumped in the ocean.
The only memorial that I want is in the memories of those I cared about.

I suspect it isn't a problem with use on veterans' headstones,
but more a problem with displaying it on a US government

Veteran's Administration just can't show them on the
website. I'm pretty sure that anyone asking for these
symbols on a tomb will know what they look like.
Still strange. It's not like it's being used for commercial purposes.
It would be used to honour the dead.
I suspect it isn't a problem with use on veterans' headstones,
but more a problem with displaying it on a US government
web site.
Sorry, that's what I meant-displaying it on the website.

Of the currently approved list of 38, about 17 are for
faiths other than christian - that in a country that has
historically ranged around 80%+ christian.
Is there any kind of internationally approved Wiccan symbol?
I know the VA has been working on what to do about
Wiccan veterans' tombstones for a few years now, I
wonder how many people have to belong to a religion
before it can get on their approved list.
Have some bureacrats wanting not to offend any Wiccans
by using the wrong symbol, add some bureacrats who don't
want to add any symbols at all, add some bureacrats
who actually *do* have a prejudice against what they see
as satan-worshippers, and I can see how the process
of adding a Wiccan symbol could get stalled indefinitely.

I'm suspecting more bureacratic inertia than "ignorance,

one person holding up the process and they're a Zen
Bhuddist - but I may be too willing to assign this to
ineptitude rather than evil.

I'm just going by anecdotal evidence here, but I have a feeling
that almost all the adherents to neopagan religions that the
average American christian has ever met were christians who
were going through a "let's make mommy and daddy go crazy"
phase where they played at being pagans - thus the image of
neopaganism as a "fake religion", just a rebellious playacting
young people go through before they grow up and get serious
about worshipping that guy who used to be really into making
sure the tip of every penis got snipped off.
You may very well be correct. The clueless and their altar egos....
