I don't mean to be rude, but how long does it take you to find a key? I've
watched fourth graders hunt and peck and never once seen this happen to
them.

Go to the Control Panel and select Accessibility Options.
Uncheck the "Use StickyKeys" checkbox, and then press the "Settings"

Certainly Microsoft should not have made this "feature" standard. Then

A client of mine was reduced almost to raving by the StickyKeys feature.
His madness crescendoed when he found that typing "sticky" into the XP

I've never accessed this before. After reading this thread I looked into it
and found that mine was unchecked. Since I never unchecked it, I would
imagine that it was that way when I installed Windows a month ago.

I wonder if Microsoft changed the default setting for later editions of
XP, after customers complained.
I encountered StickyKeys the very first time I ran XP. I'd often used
the Shift key to close screen savers, for one, and I'd sometimes tap
idly on the Shift key while waiting for a program or web page to load.
It had always been a harmless practice -- until Microsoft found a way to
attach an annoyance to it. :)

They are. The trouble is this mode turns itself on when I keep my
finger on the shift key for too long - which happens to a non-typist
when he is finding the other key.
Once it's done that I'm screwed. The shift key no longer works, mouse
clicks select blocks rather than options, etc.
I end up rebooting.

Did you uncheck the Use StickyKeys box? Maybe uncheck the Use
Shortcut option in StickyKeys Settings? It doesn't come on at all for
me with these unchecked.

I didn't find that. Part of the problem is that it no longer comes
with a manual, and you are supposed to use the help system when y ou
need it. But sometimes you can't.

Assuming you don't need any of them, you can remove the accessibility options
completely. Go into Control Panel, open up the "Windows Setup" tab.
Accessibility is the first one on the list. Uncheck it, click "Apply" and when
it's done, you should never have that problem again. At least that's how it
works in 98.
