Christina Asquith, a reporter in Baghdad, sees an erosion in Iraqi's
women's rights.
Asquith, 31, of New York City, N.Y., spoke Friday night at the Merket
Alumni Center regarding the state of women's rights in post-war Iraq.
She was the lecturer for the William S. Morris III Lectureship at
Tech's College of Mass Communications.
"It became increasingly obvious to me it was an important story that
the predominately male press pool was not reporting," Asquith said in
advance of her speech Friday.
"These rights are now in jeopardy because of postwar anarchy and
insecurity."
As Asquith reported on education in post-war Iraq for the New York
Times, she found Iraqi women's rights receding more under the new
regime than under Saddam Hussein.
