Let's see, according to the CIA fact book,
HIV/AIDS pct

In our last episode,

the lovely and talented Yang, AthD (h.c), Kicking AWOL's Cocaine Snorting *****

Well, actually it is because people with natural immunity to the plague have
a natural immunity to AIDS. No where in the world are there many people
with a natural immunity to plague, but the percentage of people in Europe
who are naturally immune to plague is higher than elsewhere simply because
in and around the 17th century, people in Europe who were not immune to the
plague were likely to die of it. Even though the percentage of people in
Europe who are immune to the plague (and thus AIDS) is small, it is still
higher than most of the world and with a disease that is not really very
contagious, that small percentage who can neither get the disease or pass it
on makes a difference.

Finally. A country having the courage and integrity to show a realistic

Actually it is because you are comparing a small country with a big country.
Holland also has the tallest population the world.
Luxembourg is the richest country in Europe, per capita .
Small countries are less diverse.
As you say, there probably isn't a big city in Holland with an arty
homosexual culture. There also isn't a big racial minority.
To do a better comparison, you should rank the American states and see where
Holland comes.

Have you ever visited Amsterdam? I don't know if the gay residents of
Amsterdam are "arty" but whatever they may lack in artistic talent
(Vincent van Gogh and Rembrandt are hard acts to follow) they make up
for in numbers.
The Netherlands does have a racially diverse population although not
nearly to the extent that California does (it had colonies at one
point in its history, and a number of people from those former
colonies had moved to the Netherlands).
Here's some data for you from
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_Netherlands>
* Ethnic groups: Dutch 80,9%, Indonesians, Germans, Moroccans,
Turks and others 19,1% (2006 est.)
* Religions: Roman Catholic 31%, Protestant 21%, Muslim 6.1%
(See Islam in the Netherlands), Hinduism 1.5%, other 3.6%,
not religious 40% (1998)

Last time in was in Amsterdam [2003], I walked through a whole street
lined with gay establishments - I could tell by the rainbow flags and
names of the clubs/bars. I was also amused to see recruiting posters
for the Netherlands forces aimed at gays in the window of one store [I
was born in the RSA so I have basic Dutch reading skills].

Believe what you wish if it gives you comfort Billy [bigot boy]
Taylor... I, meanwhile, will be laughing at you as I leave next week for
Frankfurt on Monday, Rome on Tuesday, Venice on Thursday, Rimini from
Saturday to Wednesday [where I will attend the international laser
conference], then back for an overnight in Rome before flying to Sofia
on Thursday to spend a week there visiting with my colleagues at the
Physics university of Sofia to work on our projects... then back to
Canada via a day in Frankfurt to meet with another colleague.
If you ask nicely Billy, I can give you the URL for my Flickr photo log
where I published the photos from my trip to China last summer... and
where I will be posting the picture on the upcoming European trip.
BTW Billy boy, I notice you were quite silent in the thread where I
announced I had become an inventor... and posted the patent number which
anyone can look up on the USPTO web site to see my name along with my
colleagues names on our UV water system patent to verify my status as a
co-inventor of a new technology.
I bet it just frosts your flakes Billy [bigot boy] Taylor that those of
us who are accepting and tolerant are regularly travelling around the
world while you are stuck stewing in your hate and bile and
contemplating your "career" as a failed "artist".

Really? Um, how's your Afrikaans?
Reason I ask is I'm working on a hard-sf RPG setting. One of my ideas
is that once FTL travel becomes affordable, every fringe group that
wants a homeland is heading out to the stars. One of the better

build a "pure" society out in the stars. (They take all sorts of Aryan

Really? Um, how's your Afrikaans?

Having left the RSA about 35 years ago now, its pretty rusty. I can
remember a few phrases and can read and understand a bit more that I can
speak but otherwise my Afrikaans reeks! :(

Reason I ask is I'm working on a hard-sf RPG setting. One of my ideas

Good premiss. I would expect there would be a number of religionist
groups such as Muslims, and fundamentalist Christians who would do the
same so they can be in control of their own planet.

One of the better

Look up the history of the "Voortrekkers" who were the people that
trekked north from the Cape to get away from BEA dominated society
there. They collided with the Africans who were heading south from the
tropical regions. There were many bloody battles in which the
Voortrrekkers massacred thousands. They, and their descendants, hold
the battles in high esteem and speak the battle names with reverence....
so that may give you some ideas for world names. Otherwise, sorry I
can't help you even though this sounds like a fascinating concept.

Well, the 2030s are known as the Mad Years. After fusion power is
introduced, the OPEC nations suffer a crash. This leads to a final
push by the radical hardliners, and a Final Jihad against Israel. It
ends with Mecca being a glassy plain that glows at night.
The Jews are together enough to settle a world (Yisrael HaChadash) and
fortify the hell out of it. Arab Muslims, having been on the losing
end of an *****-kicking as well as suffering from the oil crash, go to
space as starship crews. By the default date of the setting, Islam
has changed much in the same way Judaism changed after the Diaspora.

Here is another, complimentary idea for your novel, just to shake
things up a bit. Besides the obvious religions and nations colonizing
planets, how about also including groups with similar ideals, but are
multi-religious and international in scope.
For example, there are various medieval and renaissance re-enactment
groups would have the same basic outlook on how people should act, and
have highly intelligent and technical people available to them.
Several of those groups could get together and colonize a planet.
After a few generations, it could end up with an interesting mix of
"Old World" courtesy and fighting styles, and "modern" tech and
solutions. They would be highly tolerant of religious viewpoints,
since their ancestors were, and some currently marginal religions could
easily flourish there. Modern medicine and traditional herbalism could
also flourish.
I will admit, I am lifting the idea from another series, "filing off
the serial numbers", and then making some changes to it, since in that
series, the colony was from a despotic Earth and a lost colony, and I
am assuming that the colony is not lost in your world.
The basic idea is that if colonialization is reasonably available, many
groups could afford it, not just nations and major religions. The
basic limitation would be how expensive the travel to other worlds is
and how many habitable worlds there are. And don't forget that worlds
can have dangers and problems that are not obvious to the original
surveyors. See Anne McCaffrey's Pern series for an example of this.

That was the series I was thinking of. That is why I said that I have
"filed off the serial numbers, ...". In one of the books or in a short
story (I do not remember which), the founding of the colony was
outlined, it was basically a rich person that saw the trouble the earth
was having, and took his Society of Creative Anachronism friends with
him to colonize a new world. The witches in the story were people that
had low level psionic powers, which were mistaken for witchcraft.
Without knowledge of Berry's world, I cannot provide a better
background than a backstory for another world that would be more
diverse than some of the others.

I don't think faster-than-light travel is "hard" science fiction.
It's basically fantasy, isn't it?
Along with most high-tech dreams of colonizing other galaxies?
All we do is set aside the limits imposed by the speed of light, which
Einstein saw as the most important constant in the universe, and we can
fly to Arcturus or whatever.
Except if Einstein is right, we probably can't exceed the speed of
light - ever. The dream of space travel beyond the confines of the
solar system is therefore more or less akin
to belief in magic. Pure wishful thinking. Pure escapism.
John W. Cambell pointed this out long ago in "Analog: Science
Fact/Science Fiction."
As for the general logic of space exploration as a cure for human ills,
see Kurt Vonnegut, a good atheist writer, in "The Sirens of Titan."
Vonnegut has a fundamentalist preacher saying on the radio that "God"
has given the human species the biggest of all possible spaceships -
12,500 miles in diameter, with its own intricate life support systems,
a capability of carrying billions of human passgengers, its own massive
water supplies, its own mechanisms for
deriving energy from the sun, etc.
So what do any of us hope to accomplish by putting together some
miniscule tin cans that will loft a few humans at a time into earth
orbit for brief periods of time?
What can we accomplish by building a few tin cans capable of carrying
human beings to Mars or the outer solar system, even - compared with
the benefits that billions of people are getting from "God's spaceship"
right here on earth?
