Most wingnuts don't realize even a slight decrease in supply in the
energy market can cause prices to skyrocket, since demand tends to be
fairly inelastic--if it takes 20 gallons of gas to get you to work
every week, you wil need to buy 20 gallons whether it's $1.00 a gallon
or $4.00 a gallon.
During the Arab Oil Embargo, a decrease in world supply of oil of less
than 7 percent led to a 400 percent increase in price. During the
engineered electricity "crisis" in California, a 5 percent shortfall in
meeting demand also led to an over 400 percent increase in the retail
price. It is incredibly easy to manipulate this market. In addition to
playing with supply, you can just walk into any commodity exchange and
shout "WAR!" and the price of oil will balloon upwards. Right wingers
seem to think that supply and demand is an immutable "law" and a tidy
little process where everything is neat, efficient and determined with
scientific precission by the market, which always creates the most
desirable outcome and which is never irrational.

No. If you wish to have a "FREE" market, then you do not disallow
competition *OR* production. Monopolies are the biggest threat to the
free market.
