Object: Woo-Woo Alert... (UFO's)
Many of you might remember about 20 years ago when there was a big media
frenzy over UFO sightings at Gulf Breeze, Florida (yeah...Florida again.
We even have our own tag at FARK.com).
This guy claimed he'd seen a UFO, and he had the pictures to prove it.
The woo-woo's went nuts and flooded the area (which is about 20 miles
from where I live) like a stupid human hurricane.
http://www.ufoevidence.org/topics/gulfbreeze.htm
Video at YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1ffpsmLW8w
The guy moved away at some point and someone else moved into his house.
While they were cleaning up, they found...wait for it...a model of a UFO
that mysteriously resembled the UFO that had been sighted flying over the
community!
This blew the lid off the case for those of us who were looking for the
zipper up the monster's back (so to speak), but of course, the woo-woo's
are undaunted.
There's a retrospective coming up on local news this Monday. It sounds
like the standard media treatment of "bring out a bunch of woo-woo's and
let them yammer for a few minutes, then bring in one guy who thinks it's
***** to add balance. Edit it heavily so he gets 10 seconds of screen
time and looks like a douche. Then we'll go to weather."
The bit I heard on the radio has a woo-woo falling all over himself to
describe his brilliant attempts to make contact--"we knew it was an alien
life form, and we're working on making contact with them using high-
powered lights!"
....which puts in my mind a buncha woo-woos with portable million-
candlepower spotlights, standing on the beach near Gulf Breeze, staring
into the sky, then their leader says, "Okay...let's try the Morse Code.
On three...go!"
Local NBC affiliate, 11-15-07

I think this is the affiliate that'll be running that intrepid
investigation this Monday.

They're still undaunted, of course. I just grabbed the local station's 5-
1/2 minute (that's 5.5 minutes for you metric folks ;p ) "in-depth"
report...good grief, the woo-woo's are still lapping this up. If I don't
see it on the station's website soon I'll up it to YouTube. I shouldn't
be the only one to *ahem* "enjoy" this.

Dunno how long they'll have it on their "top stories" video page, but
here's the only really direct link I could find. Damn page itself took 7
minutes to load...buncha crap.
http://www.weartv.com/players/news/top_stories/video.shtml
Look for the title "Gulf Breeze UFO's (A Lasting Legacy)" in the right-
hand blue section.
If this doesn't work, I'll get my copy and up it to YouTube. Looks like
I'll have to; the only thing that's loading is a freaking ad and I'm
tired of waiting.
One would think a freaking COMMUNICATIONS company would have their *****

No problem with the main page, but the Gulf Breeze page won't even try
to load, because I have my browser set to block scripts it sees as
potentially nasty.

I figured as much. *sigh*
Now I have another reason not to watch ABC.

Aaah, memories...
....of the crop circle hype somewhere around the same time, over here in
Europe at least. Some appeared in a field of wheat damn close to where I
lived then, we checked them out in more detail.
Boy oh boy, couldn't that farmer have at least _tried_ to make it look
convincing before asking for 10 DM per person "as reparation for the damage
done to my wheat"? *eg*
In the center of the circles - holes where clearly the pole had been rammed
into the earth. Along the circles - clearly visible footsteps. Et cetera,
ad nauseam. We were close to demanding our money back when...
....an esoteric appeared with his pendulum and went "oooooh clearly, very
clearly, enormous powers are still at work here..."
Yeah, of course. The enormous power of stupid.
We decided that this was more fun than we hoped for and let the farmer keep
our money. Hey, we were laughing for hours after coming home :)

The funny thing about crop circles is that they broke all the
rules.
I mean, when it comes to supernatural/out-of-this-world events,
the one common/defining characteristic is that they can not
be duplicated by any earthly means. Yet, anyone not on crack
knows that crop circles are well within the capabilities of
humans.

No need, really. If the farmer did the math and decided he could make more
money charging admission to view "crop circles" than he could selling
wheat, I'd call him fiscally responsible. After all, no matter where you
live, there is never a shortage of fools.

You ain't kiddin'. Good grief, didn't Bower & Chorley even write a
book describing how they did it? The hoaxers confess, point their
fingers and laugh, and people *still* talk about flying saucers.
