Words of wisdom |
A friend's mother passed this along to me...
<Quote>
Dear Pinko Scum,
I've always had my suspicions...but now I have proof.
President Bush is a Commie. I just read that a provision
in the $284 billion highway bill under consideration on
Capitol Hill could open the way for more tolls on the
nation's interstates, marking a departure from long-
standing federal highway policy that has traditionally
frowned on collecting tolls to pay for roads built with
federal tax dollars.
I don't have to tell you that this proposal is
enthusiastically backed by the Bush administration.
Currently, only highways that were begun before the
establishment of the free interstate system in 1956 can
collect tolls. But the bill which has already been passed
by the House of Representatives would allow states to
convert up to 25 segments of the interstate highway system
into toll roads.
So, you pay your federal income tax out of which the road
funds come, then you pay the sales tax on your vehicle,
then you pay the sticker tax for your license plates, then
you probably pay a local tax in the form of a city sticker
(in Chicago it's $55), then you pay a gas tax of 18.4 cents
per gallon...and now you're going to get to pay tolls on
federal interstates.
And do you think the government is going to give you back
any of your other taxes? I'll give you three guesses and
the first two don't count.
I'm not even going to talk about the proposition to charge
drivers for mileage using federally required global
positioning locators built into every new vehicle.
This is how it works people. You take more and more money
away from the citizens until the government collects it all
and private industry disappears.
It goes from free enterprise to socialism to communism. And
with a nearly eight trillion dollar national deficit we are
just a cumshot away from socialism.

One issue this fails to raise is the fact that toll roads already
suck up millions of gallons of fuel in this country (the United
States).
Not only do Americans drive some of the least fuel efficient
cars in the world, but most of our road systems are designed
to STOP traffic, not move it along.
Off of the highways, most roads are pocked with traffic lights
and stop signs, all designed to require frequent stopping. And
now they want to do the same to the highways.
You get *Zero* miles per gallon out of fuel when you're
stopped at a red light, or in the newest traffic jam created
by a toll booth.
Just try to imagine how much fuel is wasted in America
EVERY DAY by bringing over-sized cars up to highway
speeds, and then stopping them at toll booths just so they
can burn even more fuel to get back up to highway speeds.
And then there's the traffic jams that toll booths cause. A
few times, traveling from Maine to New Hampshire, I
inched my way through a traffic jam for 20 minutes before
reaching a sign that read, "Toll Booth 2 Miles."
Yes, the toll booths honestly had backed up traffic that far.
It doesn't require an accident. All it requires is that
thousands of cars an hour all come to a complete stop
at the same place, and slowly file -- individually -- into
a limited number of booths.
Toll booths are a choke point, and they not only throw
away all the fuel it took to bring cars up to highway
speeds, but it also wastes the fuel the cars burn as they
sit idle in traffic jams.

Toll booths are such idiotic things. Better to use a smart card. Use
the card lanes to fly past a monitor at 80mph, the card gets scanned,
emits it's ID code, and your card account gets debited. Or what they
do for the 401 in Ontario: cameras scan your license plate and you
get a bill.
Lots of good technology can be brought to bare on this problem
provided the people in charge know what they're doing (which is a
pretty big presumption.)

Nitpick: The ETR toll highway [the only toll road in Ontario AFAIK] is
the 407... the 401 is still free :)
in Ontario: cameras scan your license plate and you
get a bill.
Canadian developed and implemented technology at it's finest! That
same technology was recently sold to London [UK not Ont.] for
automatically billing vehicles entering the core of the city a
"congestion fee".

True. However, in a society that is till debating Evolution it is
difficult to imagine there are many people in charge who have a clue! ;)
