WingNutDaily discusses the Texas State Board of Education's 11-4 vote
to approve biology textbooks, promotes Wells' Icons of Evolution book.
From the article:
----------------------------
Activists who want evolution's strengths and weaknesses addressed in
science textbooks lost a battle yesterday in Texas, which has
influence on curriculum nationwide as the country's second-largest
buyer of school materials.
The State Board of Education in Austin gave preliminary approval by an
11-4 vote to a slate of books opposed by groups that contend the texts

I wonder why no creationist supporters or even the DI do not
acknowledge that Wells' book has more factual errors in it that any
text that he is critisizing. If they are really interested in
sceintific accuracy, shouldn't they start with their own bogus stuff?

If they were really interested in scientific accuracy they
wouldn't be creationist, and WorldNutDaily wouldn't be
supporting them.

Boy, could the above paragraph been any more misleading?
Translation: fanatics who have absolutely no idea
how science works failed in an effort to have their religious
ideas enshrined in the educational curriculum of the
one of the biggest states in the Union, and one whose
textbook decisions have far-reaching consequence.
Fortunately, while the war against pseudo- and
junk-science is far from over, a major battle has
been won by the forces of good.

Heaven knows the State Board of Education in Texas
doesn't always get it right (they have caved in to the
Gablers and other textbook censors way too often,
for example), but they seem to have done the right
thing this time.
Best, Marc

How about we make the creationists a deal: They can write textbooks, but all
religious texts must be written by atheists, and any religious books written
by religious types must be banned. I'm sure that would go over like a lead
blimp.

Naturally!
What's more interesting is the DI press release, and
that they are disseminating them through the financial
newswires. They are pretty slick operators.
Textbook Reformers See Last-Minute Victory in Texas Decision
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/031107/sff038_1.html
But here's the list from the WND article....
"His book takes on 10 of the most prominent arguments neo-Darwinists use as
examples of evidence for evolution and claims to show how each is
misrepresented and misused to support Darwin's theory of naturalism.
"Dogmatic Darwinists claim that nothing in biology makes sense except in the
light of evolution," Wells says. "Then they misrepresent the evidence to
promote their view. The truth is, nothing in biology makes sense except in
the light of evidence."
He contends over the past decade known scientific frauds have been presented
as evidence for evolution, including the embryo drawings of the German
scientist Haeckel - known to be fraudulent for a century, he says - and the
peppered moth experiment in which researchers glued moths to trees.
Wells says other fraudulent images include:
A laboratory flask containing a simulation of the earth's primitive
atmosphere, in which electric sparks produce the chemical building-blocks of
living cells;
The evolutionary tree of life, reconstructed from fossil and molecular
evidence;
Similar bone structures in a bat's wing, a porpoise's flipper, a horse's
leg, and a human hand that point to their origin in a common ancestor;
Fruit flies with an extra pair of wings, showing that genetic mutations can
provide the raw materials for evolution."
