Worst commencement speakers of 2004 |
At the 50 highest-ranked undergraduate universities (according to U.S.
News & World Report), liberals overwhelmingly dominate the list of
graduation speakers. Conservatives are at a decided disadvantage at
commencements. Not only are prestigious American liberals bestowed
honorary degrees and open microphones. Radical international liberals and
groovy airhead liberals get the bully pulpit, too. People like Rush
Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Tony Snow and Bill O'Reilly are not scheduled to
speak anywhere. The complete domination of leftist commencement speakers
is more a symptom than a disease. Liberals dominate the faculties,
administration and student body at virtually every major university in the
United States.

LOL! If you want the right to be better represented in acadaemia,
perhaps you should offer up someone a little more impressive than Rush
Limbaugh! The man's an absolute muppet.

Boo fucking hoo. The complete domination of the media by
extreme lunatic-right religious reactionaries *is* a disease.
Surely, they overwhelmingly dominate hell, the prisons and the psych wards.
There is no hell, but it is well established that xoid
fundamentalists dominate prisons and looney bins.
Remember their mottos - their way of life:

I'm sure Newt Gingrich, Gary Condit, Bob Barr etc. etc. etc.

an unjustified war against Iraq so we can slaughter
10,000 innocent civilians and sacrifice 800+ US troops,
all for the greater glory of Halliburton?

That's why we're in Afghanistan and Iraq. That's why hundreds of

Note, though, that there are far more terrorists in Iraq now than there
were before the war. For all his evil, Saddam Hussein wasn't allied with
Islamic militants; they were part of his *opposition*. With him gone,
their influence has *increased*. A classic case of "the enemy of my enemy
is *not*, in general, my friend."
IIRC, the coalition that fought the 1991 war deliberately decided *not* to
try to remove Saddam, for precisely this reason.

George Bush Snr. did not get the world's support for occupying Iraq. Russia
in particular was opposed.

At the 50 highest-ranked undergraduate universities (according to U.S.
News & World Report), liberals overwhelmingly dominate the list of
graduation speakers. Conservatives are at a decided disadvantage at
commencements. Not only are prestigious American liberals bestowed
honorary degrees and open microphones. Radical international liberals and
groovy airhead liberals get the bully pulpit, too. People like Rush
Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Tony Snow and Bill O'Reilly are not scheduled to
speak anywhere. The complete domination of leftist commencement speakers
is more a symptom than a disease. Liberals dominate the faculties,
administration and student body at virtually every major university in the
United States.

My intention is not to flame here so don't get me wrong, but what is
the conclusion of your post here? Why do you feel this is the case
(liberal domination of colleges in the USA)?
I've found that with age, conservatism grows within each and every one
of us. As our kids grow up and face the wacky world, our sence of
wanting to protect them from what each of us has had to go through
causes us to lean more towards the 'safe' view of things...the
conservative view.
My feeling is that liberal thinking will come from the youth as
they've been taught, especially in college, to think for oneself and
if possible, outside of the box, or away from the norm...this practice
is the opposite of conservatism. So my take on it is that during a
process of mental growth, one is more inclined to give credence to
ideas that ten years from now they'd simply discard by referring to
the opinion they've stuck with for years. I found this to be most
evident in my own experiences...as age catches up with me, my opinions
and feelings on certain subjects tend to be come more and more
conservative - - - that is until i catch the two by four across the
face in an op-ed piece written somewhere which causes me to completely
rethink my position. I'm thankful for the ability to break out of the
shell if necessary...but what sucks about most of the conservative
talk show people is that they're inclined to stay in their shells
regardless of anything alternative to their viewpoint that's been
brought to the table. Those who fill their ears with this day in and
day out will not be as able to break the chains should an enlightening
idea or point of view come through, and that's the exact opposite of
what you want an individual to be able to do during their years of
education.
So my conclusion is that liberals are typically more open-minded than
conservatives and in college, being open minded is crucial to assuring
that one experiences the type of mental growth they'd expect for what
they paid for.

Actually, the worst commencement speaker this year was probably Tom
Ridge... his entire speech was a propaganda speil for the Bush
campaign. Boring AND inappropriate.

How does one define a liberal? it seems that one mans conservative is another
mans liberal.
It seems that everytime you disagree with something you scream "liberal" as if
there is a grand conspiracy theory, along the lines of "little green men" and
"the jews control the media".

Sheesh, why pay rich men to speak when you can hear them for free on the
radio or TV? Money's tight in educational circles. Are you decrying
these financial decisions simply because the use of those funds isn't to
make the rich richer?
Really, if the folks above wanted to speak to graduates, they could
craft an entire show to that very purpose and address 50, maybe 5,000
times the number of graduates at the average commencement. Hmm, guess
they'd rather not bother. And if they're not willing to bother, why pay
them to pretend to care?

The danger for what the press derisively calls the 'Religious Right' is that they are making the same mistakes the religious left made. To solve the moral problems of the nation they are looking to government rather than the Creator of their faith and His strategies.
