Object: Would you trust an Atheist to tell the truth?
You are in court. You are member of the jury.
There are two witnesses. It matters not whether they are witnesses for
the defence or prosecution.
All things being equal:-
One witness is a Christian and takes the oath on the Bible to tell the
truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help him God.
If this witness lies, he goes to Hell. That is he/she believes they
will go to Hell.
The other witness is an Atheist and only affirms they will tell the
truth.
You only have this witness' word that they will not lie.
Who has more to lose [in their expectation] if they lie?
Who do you trust more?

" [ . . . ] I say to you, make no oath at all, [ . . . ]."

Matthew 5:34

The other witness is an Atheist and only
affirms they will tell the truth.

What makes you think s/he's an Atheist? S/he could be one of the few
Christians who knows The Bible, like we Atheists do, and gay as well?

You only have this witness' word that they will not lie.

While you have the Christian's actions to demonstrate that s/he is a
hypocrite.

Who do you trust more?

You don't truth either: you weigh the evidence.

I've seen Christians lie quite often. I've seen Christian pastors lie
from the pulpit. Christian honesty has never impressed me.

Lets look at the candidates, Ted Haggard (or an fundy of similar standing
such as a RC priest, etc) or Prof. Richard Dawkins (or an atheist of similar
standing, etc). Well, I know who I'd prefer to be giving evidence, & it
certainly isn't anyone worried about burning in "hell".
Swear on the bible? I'd rather ***** on it first.

Some Christians lie all the time, under oath

lying under oath in a court of law. That's not
to say all Christians lie, just that the so-called
threat of hell is no deterrent.
Hence, I would trust the witness who came
across more trustworthy, nevermind the
individual's religious beliefs. Any oath or
affirmation is useless except in a legal sense
that if someone is found to tell a lie under
oath/affirmation, they can be prosecuted
for perjury. Apparently even that real-life
threat isn't enough for some Christians who
believe they can get away with all kinds
of crap. Well, gee, because they DO.

The threat to the Christian, in their own mind, is a post-mortem one,
eternal damnation. That's pretty serious for the believer. Were your

Where did I state that? I made it clear that
lying under oath/affirmation is perjury which
is a criminal offense. That doesn't strike me
as a "meaningless ritual".

The threat to the Christian, in their own mind, is a post-mortem

Oh right, the usual excuse. They can't be
"Christians" because they didn't behave as
some observer thinks they should behave.

The threat of "damnation" isn't much of a threat when the believers
think all they need to do is say the magic words and all is
forgiven.

That's an excellent point. And one no Christian
(however defined) can argue against.

It is a ritual that has a secular purpose, and so has equal meaning to
any person regardless of his/her religion. The use of a Bible (or at
least an object that everyone assumes is a Bible) is purely customary
and has no special meaning if it's used in a secular court.

Whichever witness has the more credible testimony. Of course, these 2
witnesses may be testifying about completely different things, so there may
well be no need to trust one more than the other.

about their god even though they claim they do.

truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help him God.

If this witness lies, he goes to Hell. That is he/she believes they

You only have this witness' word that they will not lie.

You have been asked to step down from the jury as your answer shows
quite clearly that your personal prejudices influence your judgment.

the defence or prosecution.

I wouldn't want a theist on a jury either. Remember the Spanish
Inquisition? The Salem Witch trials? If you want someone to have a
fair trial then a theist is not to be trusted for jury duty. Period.

I believe the witness who tells the truth. The atheist of course.
Simple question = simple answer. I trust the atheist as he does not
support a belief in imaginary friends and otherwise. Why?
