WRITER, EDITOR CONRAD F. GOERINGER SPEAKS SATURDAY AT
ALABAMA REGIONAL ATHEIST MEET
Birmingham, Alabama --- Saturday, August 9, 2003
Writer and Editor Conrad F. Goeringer will be among the guest
speakers this Saturday, August 9, 2003 at the Alabama Regional
Atheist Meet (RAM) sponsored by American Atheists.
Mr. Goeringer is Director for Public Policy for American Atheists,
and Editor of AANEWS. A former antiquarian book dealer and
investigative reporter, his articles on politics, science and popular
culture have appeared in numerous publications including Schism, New
Times, Sky & Telescope, and The American Atheist Magazine.
Mr. Goeringer speaks on "THE NIGHT THE MARTIANS LANDED -- Social
Panics, Critical Thinking and Lessons for the Future."
It was "the panic broadcast," one of the greatest hoaxes in modern
American history, and it raised profound questions about mass media,
public credulity and critical thinking in times of social
dislocation. It was the Orson Welles -- Mercury Theater radio play,
"The War of the Worlds."
This fall, we celebrate the 65th anniversary of this historic
broadcast. "The Night the Martians Landed" examines why so many
people panicked, and discusses a university study showing that
religious people were far more likely to uncritically believe in the
narrated events than were nonreligious listeners. Martians, and Mars
have played an evocative role in the public imagination and
narratives involving everything from intelligent life in the universe
to threats against existing social orders. And the Welles broadcast
remains a treasure trove of lessons for our future, including the
need to promote critical thinking about political, social or
religious claims.
Join us this Saturday for a day-long program of informative speakers
including American Atheists President Ellen Johnson; Texas Freedom
Network Deputy Political Director Andrew Dupuy; Philosopher Delos
McKown, and others.
