A 12-year-old boy described by a neighbor as having a volatile temper
appeared in juvenile court Monday on two counts of first-degree murder in
the deaths of his mother and younger brother.
The victims were found beaten and stabbed to death Sunday morning in the
family's apartment outside Washington.
Police said they found a metal bar, the kind normally used to secure a car's
steering wheel to prevent theft, believed to have been used in the killings.
The boy, too young to face homicide charges as an adult in Maryland,
appeared at his hearing via closed-circuit television from a juvenile
detention center. Judge Melanie M. Shaw Geter ordered he remain in custody
until his next hearing, set for May 15. His name was not released because of
his age.
The boy's mother, Katrina Denise Powe, 31, and 9-year-old brother, Mystery
Toma Hillian, were found dead around 11 a.m. Sunday after Prince George's
County police were called to the apartment.

informing us of what we would or wouldn't do?

about atheists or liberals (or in fact anyone who is not an extreme
right christian conservative). Do not presume to know how we will react

Young of course should explain why he thinks liberals will *have* to
spend any time insuring [sic] this kid's rights, which are merely the
right to a fair trial in this case. Is someone planning a lynching or
something? Is the DA going to tamper with a witness or withhold
evidence that the kid is innocent from the defense? If the DA does
his job properly, and the kid gets a reasonable lawyer assigned to
him, what on earth is there for liberals to do?
We "liberals" do not want criminals wandering around on the streets.
We simply don't want innocent people falsely convicted and figure that
it makes a hell of a lot of sense to spend a dollar on education and
social programs when that will save you 2 dollars spent on keeping
some guy in prison. Some would call that a fiscally sound policy,
unlike the policies of our Republican administration, which are
slowly bankrupting the country.

permits. Which seems to be confinment until his 21st birthday in a

Beyond all the political ***** about this case, does anyone know why he
did it? We had a kid, about thirteen years old, in my old neighborhood, I
guess I was about six at the time, shoot his mother in the head through the
back screen door. We all knew the lady, she could be a bit cranky
sometimes, but she was, overall, nice to us. The kid said he shot her
because she was trying to get him to mow the lawn. This was back in the
late 1950's, so it seemed like a very rare occurence. Of course, such
things never made the national news back then, so it's difficult to say if
it was rare or not.
