Because what says everything is under control than having planes
carrying your senators come under fire?

Plane carrying U.S. lawmakers in Iraq comes under attack.
A military cargo plane carrying three senators — Mel Martinez (R-FL),
Richard Shelby (R-AL), and James Inhofe (R-OK) — and a House member —
Bud Cramer (D-IL) — was forced to take evasive maneuvers and dispatch
flares to avoid ground fire after taking off from Baghdad on Thursday
night. The AP reports:

Apparently you think that the attack occurred in a bubble. It isn't the
first attack against US planes/personnel in Baghdad.
Regardless of that, it was more than just a guy with an RPG. It was at
least 3 of them according to the article. Not exactly a stellar example of
security near an airport. Hell, they can't even secure the road to the
airport. But sure Fred, you go ahead and repeat to yourself that it was
simply a matter of "one guy with an RPG".
You also neglect to take into account the high probability that the
"terrorists" knew that it was a high profile target. But realizing
something like that would require you to take the needle out of your arm.

The guys "securing" things ARE the terrorists. How many more reports
from the scene do we need that the outfit working with our guys one
day is the outfit our guys are fighting the next, before we'll
understand that Iraqis - as a whole - want us out of their country?

We TELL Ishmael that he has to be on special alert, because this plane

to tell his brother Mohammed to take the plane out?

You don't. You haven't had an original thought in years.

Nice strawman you got there, Yangie-poo.

When they still have to take off as steeply as possible because of
worried about attacks it says that things are quite bad.

Matt, one guy with an RPG launcher is not the same as a whole city

Nice strawman you have there yourself. It does mean that we can't
control the area around the airport. Nor, as it happens, can we make
the Green Zone sufficiently safe that people can walk without wearing
amour.

Right, so when Michael Moore caught Republican Congressmen unguarded
in suprise interviews in DC as shown in F911, those GOPers had
invisible bodyguards following them.

Those who actually walk around DC, that is. You should try it some
time. The parking is horrible, but walking around is safe enough if
you don't go darting out mid-block into heavy traffic.

That's been our experience, the one time Dale and I were in DC as part of a
group - drove in to the Metro station at Vienna, and took Metro into DC to the
station around Independence and 9th SW. It was a Wednesday morning, and a
sunny day - we walked the mall from there westward to south of the Zero
Milestone, visited the National Museum of American History, the Holocaust
Museum, the Freer Gallery, and a quick peek at the Smithsonian (which we'll
reserve more time for, the next time we're up that way), and the traffic was
no problem for a Houstonian who's had to deal with that for 40-odd years.

No IEDs? No having to duck machine gun bullets?

I should have mentioned that our visit was in 2001 - six weeks before 9/11.

Mine was in the spring. About the only "danger" I felt was some of
the prices. $3 for a container of ordinary coffee? Never once looked
over my shoulder or felt the need to dodge bullets or watch for IEDs.

True...and I'd like to hop across the ditch into Arlington and hit the Hard
Times Cafe location there again, as we were hooked on that during the
too-short time it was here out in Stafford. (It's just not right that there's
not a chili house in the state where it was invented. ;-)
