You Are Going to Hell

The more I study Christianity and hear what Christians have to say about the
"faith," the more I am convinced that Christianity is a socially accepted
form of schizophrenia. I determined this from the dogmas of the various
Christian sects such as an invisible god, holy ghosts, heaven, hell, devils,
and a virgin who allegedly gave birth to a god. There are Christians who
communicate with a dead man. There are a billion Christians waiting for the
return of a man who supposedly died two thousand years ago. The Mormons view
of Jesus with helium in his veins that keeps him suspended in heaven sounds
like what schizophrenics would say about themselves or others.
Talk to any patient in a psychiatric ward (or any homeless street person).
Then there are those Christians who can speak on god's behalf about those
they do not like and want to cosign to everlasting fire in Hell. They hold
in anathema all those who do not have the correct brand of Christianity:
Jews, Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, atheists, homosexuals and the guy
next door. Christians are the most HATE-filled people who can love a
chimera, and hate a human being. When a Christian says you are going to
hell, what they mean is they would like to kill you if they had the means,
and in past centuries they did exactly that.

Then it is not schizophrenia.
Any more than scientism is, which many atheists seem to have.
To be a mental disorder, it has to be socially unacceptable.
But I get your point.

So mass hysteria isn't a mental disorder simply because everybody's doing
it? Interesting. ;-)
But I get your point. :-)

THE CORRUPTION OF REALITY ( 2)
By John F. Schumaker,Ph.D
Many people steer away from a scientific study of religion since it is a
sensitive issue. However, my own view is that religion, defined the broadest
manner possible, and holds the key to a much deeper understanding of human
behavior, especially in the area of abnormal behavior. This is because of
the very fine line separating religion from many classes of psychopathology,
with that line being culture itself. That is, without culture sanction, most
or all of our religious beliefs and rituals would fall into the domain of
mental disturbance. Religion is abnormal in the literal sense of the word.
By this I mean, that, in the course of adopting religion, one is required to
construe (or misconstrue) the world in terms or principles that contradict
or supersedes naturalistic modes of understanding.

So? Where "principles that contradict or supersede naturalistic modes
of understanding" are the norm, naturalistic modes of understanding
are abnormal.

Actually, a condition is a disorder, in the US at least, if an
APA-certified psychiatrist says it is. What they mean by this is that
it is a trait that negatively affects your life. Having a hysterical
condition that is widely shared might be beneficial, if those not
having it are the ones whose lives are negatively affected.
So I get your point. ;-)

Ah! You mean they are bigotted people who believe that anyone who doesn't
think like them must have a mental problem. Hmmm. Lot's of that going around
these days.
