panicked and mutilated her body before burying her in the Arizona desert.

Sean Goff, 38, took the witness stand in his murder trial. He is charged
with killing Joy Risker, 25. Risker disappeared on Sept. 19, 2003, after
having dinner with Goff at the historic Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego.
Risker was one of two women married to Goff. She, Goff and Sheila Goff
shared a home in the Kensington neighborhood of San Diego. Risker and
Goff had two children together, and Sheila and Sean Goff had one child
together.
Goff, who is a computer salesman and youth pastor, originally admitted
killing Risker in 2003. Tuesday, he testified that she threatened him
with a knife in their Kensington home after they argued about her plans
to attend beauty school. Goff told the court that he and Risker fought
over the knife. He said he was able to point the blade of the knife
toward Risker and pressed it into her.
"I pushed the knife into her," Goff testified. "At some point, I took
the knife away and I stabbed her again."
Prosecutors said that Risker was stabbed at least six times.
Goff said he did not think investigators would believe his story of
self-defense and that he panicked. He said that he decided to cover up
the crime by mutilating Risker's corpse, including cutting off her
fingertips with a meat cleaver and sawing out her teeth.
"I arranged the towels so I wouldn't see anything except what I was
cutting," Goff said.
After mutilating the body, Goff said he loaded it into a plastic storage
container and drove to Arizona, where he buried the body in the desert
near Gila Bend.
"I thought if I called the police, I'd go to jail and I wouldn't see my
kids again," Goff said, breaking into tears.
Risker's skeletal remains were found by a hiker in 2004.
