(~) Jesus as Friend
Passages about Jesus Series, Part 2
If you have a few close friends, or even one, consider yourself blessed!
What a gift, to have someone in your life whom you can count on for
unconditional love, brutal honesty, support, loyalty and faithfulness. But
no one can surpass Jesus as our very Best Friend. This week we will look
at passages that show Jesus as our Friend. May we look to Him as our model
in our friendships.
Jesus is the ultimate friend:
(Prov 18:24 NASU) A man of too many friends comes to ruin, But there is a
friend who sticks closer than a brother
Jesus' friendship is self-sacrificing:
(John 15:9-13 NRSV) As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide
in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just
as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. I have said
these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be
complete. "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have
loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for
one's friends.
Jesus shares with His friends:
(John 15:15 NRSV) I do not call you servants any longer, because the
servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you
friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard
from my Father.
Even as Judas was betraying Him, Jesus still called him "friend." His love
is unconditional.
(Mat 26:50 NRSV) Jesus said to him, "Friend, do what you are here to do."
Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested him.
Jesus' instructions for how we can be a good friend to Him:
(John 15:14 NRSV) You are my friends if you do what I command you.
