(~) Tell Us How You Really Feel
Isaiah 55:8,9 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your
ways My ways," Declares the Lord. For the heavens are higher than the
earth, So are my ways higher than your ways, And my thoughts than your
thoughts."
Judge Richard Jones was recently brought up on judicial misconduct charges
in Nebraska. He had signed court papers with names like Adolf Hitler and
set bonds for, "a zillion dollars". The last straw, it seems, was when he
tossed lighted firecrackers into a fellow judges' office. He expressed
himself well when he explained, "I was venting".
Everybody vents, but often when venting we forget that our anger is often
misplaced. We fret over circumstances, and allow people to push our
buttons, but it is God our Lord and Saviour who has allowed this or that
to come into our lives. And He has done this that we might grow in grace.
Growing in the grace of our Lord is not always fun. We are the Children of
God and sometimes we act and behave, well, like kids (or judges). We must
remember that our thoughts are not always God's thoughts, our ways are not
always in tune with God's ways, His ways are higher, His ways are better,
and it is through His ways only that we shall overcome the world.
The sovereignty of God: that often maligned and overlooked Truth of
Scripture. Psalm 135: 6 "Whatever the Lord pleases, He does. In heaven and
in earth, in the seas and in all deeps." There is comfort in this verse,
because our God is also loving God. See also, Proverbs 8:15, 16, Amos
4:13, 2 Kings 19:27, or a host of other verses if you doubt that God is
sovereign in your life. Or should I simply say, "see Bible"?
Hand in hand with God's sovereignty is the blessing of the providence of
God working in our lives. Providence can be expressed simply as John Trapp
did. He said, "God made meat before mouths," ie, God planned well.
Providence can also be thought of profoundly. In realizing that hind-sight
is often clearer than foresight, John Trapp said regarding providence,
"Some providences, like Hebrew letters, must be read backwards."
As said above, everybody vents. It would often be wise, before venting,
during venting, and after venting, to ask God, "Why did you allow this to
happen in my life?", "Why was this door closed?", "Why was this one not
opened?" Take it to the Lord in prayer, is not simply a nice chorus in a
hymn, it is a truth to take to heart.
"Anger is temporary insanity." C. H. Spurgeon
