(~) The Value of a Soul
Matthew 16:26
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose
his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Quote: You have nothing to do but to save souls; therefore spend and be
spent in this work.
In 1998, artist Todd McFarlane purchased Mark McGuire's 70th home run ball
from a fan who caught the ball on the historic night in which McGuire hit
it. At the time, it seemed like a valuable investment, considering that
McGuire had broken a record that had been in place for 38 years. It was
presumed that in time this ball would be worth several times its original
value. It wasn't likely that another player would reach 70 home runs for
quite a while. However, this fall Barry Bonds broke Mark McGuire's record,
rendering his home-run ball virtually worthless.
The value of sports memorabilia or other collectibles often declines,
especially if old records are broken and new records are established.
However, as we see in Scripture, the value of a soul always increases.
Jesus knew and understood this principle when he spoke to the women at the
well. At first glance it seemed almost worthless to approach her. She
lived an immoral lifestyle. She was a Samaritan. Yet, Christ's love saw
past these barriers. He knew that if she believed in the Messiah, she
would spread the message throughout her community. One seemingly
unimportant person could make a big difference in the Kingdom of Christ.
We need to remind ourselves daily of the value of an eternal soul. That
one person who we are hesitant to talk. The co-worker, friend, or relative
who are different than us. Their souls are worth more than the entire
world (Matthew 8:36). And they just may be your town's next evangelist.
