About Christian control of the government
To Read the Bible in 1 year, today read: Ezekiel 13-15
To Know:
³When they heard this they were silenced. And they glorified God, saying,
ŒThen to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance unto life.¹² (Acts
11:18)
In 1831, when Alexis de Tocqueville came to America, he was a man on a
mission. Tocqueville wanted to understand the difference between the
American and French revolutions. We declared independence on July 4, 1776.
The French broke with the crown thirteen years later. Our revolution
resulted in a great nation. The French experienced a blood bath. What did
Americans possess that was the missing in France? Tocqueville concluded that
the missing ingredient in France was vital religious faith.
France had a state-supported religious system. Americans separated the
church and state. This separation freed the faith of the people to act as a
life-changing force in the body politic. Almost every American home used the
Bible to give faith a godly form. Scripture was a force giving our nation a
strong moral character. Today some jurists reinterpret the separation of
church and state to separate the state from God. Our court often sides with
those among us who want to make us think that our founders intended to hide
the Christian faith from public view.
The men who framed our constitution wanted the government out of the
business of establishing religion. They were wise. In this way Christians
were left free to check the power of government with the power of truth.
Tocqueville saw that when the gospel was at liberty it would create strength
of character and do good for the nation.
To Do:
Many fear that Christians want to control the government. History proves
that this has not been true in the United States. The congress is prohibited
from making any laws respecting religion and American Christians have wisely
always agreed with this insightful restriction on government power.
