JESUSı RESURRECTION: FACT OR FICTION?
About the size of Faith
To read the Bible in one year, today read: 1 Chronicles 1-3
To Know:
³Without having seen him you love him; though you do not now see him you
believe in him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy.² (1 Pet.1:8)
Imagine if we could enjoy only what we can see. How utterly impoverished we
would be if life was rid of faith. Faith comes by hearing, the Bible says. I
grew up hearing the Red Sox on radio. Time and again I thrilled to the
exploits of Willams, Doerr, DiMaggio and others I couldnıt see with my eyes.
In 1975 I was driving through Maine listening to the Sox comeback against
the Los Angeles Angels. That game turned the season around and landed Boston
in the World Series. If joy were restricted to seeing, our lives would be
severely stunted.
Jesus Christ comes to us through the written word of God. He comes to us
through faith in what we hear in the scripture. Not everyone has ears to
hear the word of the Lord. Jesus dictated seven letters to John for
inclusion in the book of Revelation. In each epistle Christ confined his
message to those who had ears to hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
Was not this equivalent to saying that the message is for the ones who have
faith? Faith creates an inner bond that unites us to the Lord himself.
To Do:
How great must my faith be before it counts with the Lord? Isaiah says of
Godıs servant that he will not snuff out the most fragile faith. The prophet
wrote, ³He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the
street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will
not quench.² (Is. 42:2,3) Little faith is sufficient provided it is faith in
Christ. The Lord does not intend that faith remain small, but faith as small
as a tiny mustard seed wins a hearing in heaven.
Once we have faith, wisdom tells us to put it to work. Faith that doesnıt
work is not genuine faith. In every circumstance of life our faith looks to
the Lord to discern what he plans to do in the moment. In this way our faith
glorifies God.

"The faith" of the bible story began with Abraham, when he had believed
the gospel that his descendants would someday rule all the land between
the Euphrates and the Nile, and become a blessing to all the nations.
The faith, and the gospel, of the bible has never changed, in spite of
the fact that Constantine officially endorsed a "spiritual" version of
the gospel/faith, which would not require the overthrow of the Roman
empire.
*The faith of the bible* is not belief "in" things which happened in
the past, but belief in things that are hoped for the future. Faith in
the past is not the faith of the bible. The true faithful watch, wait,
and prepare, for the messiah who will bring about the resurrection of
the Davidic kingdom, the rule of all the land between the Euphrates and
the Nile, and the blessing of all the nations.
