SERVING CHRIST IN WARTIME
All good is God's grace
To Read: Psalms 40-42
To Know:
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate
your enemy, 'But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who
persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for
he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the
just and on the unjust.'" (Matt 5: 43-45)
The dates advance through the years one day at a time except when they fast
forward by two during a leap year. This Monday is September 6th, but in
2001 Monday was September 10th. Three years ago this Monday was the last
day before the calendar was turned back half a millennium when religious
warfare ended.
Early on that Monday three years ago our son Alex and his friend Chris were
pulled over by an off duty cop as they sped toward Logan Airport. The
friends had overslept and feared missing their flight from Boston to Los
Angeles to compete for a spot on CBS's reality show "Amazing Race," The two
barely made the flight. The next morning the same plane ended its journey
in one of the Twin Trade Towers at the tip end of Manhattan Island. Alex
and Chris were minutes from missing their plane and possibly taking the
flight on September 11.
How many times have we been spared without knowing it? Rarely is our
salvation plain to see. Most of the time only our guardian angel alone
knows that the Lord has spared us from catastrophe. This world is fallen
and disaster is normal. It is God's grace that makes a way for us to walk
through life. God is good to the just and unjust both. Faith opens our
understanding to perceive that everyone everywhere is the recipient of the
goodness of God. This broken world is a place of constant danger. All good
is the work of God's grace.
To Do:
We who walk by faith ought to continually rejoice in the grace of God.
To Ask:
Father, thank you for your grace and favor.
