DES MOINES, Iowa -- Federal agents have arrested a man in connection with
the Evelyn Miller investigation.
Evelyn, 5, disappeared July 1, 2005, and her body was found six days later
in the Cedar River.
Federal agents and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation have arrested
Danny Dean Slick, 27, of Charles City on charges of knowingly and willingly
submitting false statements to a federal agency.
Authorities said that Slick was one of the last people to see Evelyn alive.
Floyd County Attorney Marilyn Dettmer said that although the arrest is
directly related to Evelyn's murder investigation, it is a separate case.
Slick and his then-roommate, Randy Patrie, both admitted they were each one
of the last two people to see Evelyn alive at 2:30 a.m. Evelyn's mother's
boyfriend, Casey Frederiksen, has said he was sleeping.
When police first interviewed Slick, in the presence of FBI agents,
according to the indictment, they claimed Slick told investigators he and
Patrie were at Evelyn's apartment just a short time and they went home. The
federal agents now say that was not true. The indictment said what really
happened is Patrie really wasn't home -- he was somewhere else at the time
Evelyn vanished.
Many key people have repeatedly been untruthful and concealed relevant
information related to the murder case, according to a news release from
Dettmer. Others who have made false statements have been investigated and
similar investigations are now in place, the release said.
"With Slick's arrest, we are sending an important message to those persons.
We will not tolerate their actions. They have impeded our investigation into
the murder of an innocent child, and we will seek justice," Dettmer said in
a statement.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Cedar Rapids will prosecute Slick's case. He
was transported to Cedar Rapids where he is set to make his first appearance
before a judge at 4:30 p.m. Thursday
