Tam High anti-gay attacks a hoax
By Keri Brenner IJ reporters Sunday, May 08, 2005 -
'Victim' fabricated stories, police say A rash of gay-bashing incidents =
at Tamalpais High School was the work of a student gay leader who =
claimed she was the victim of hate crimes, it was disclosed yesterday.=20
The 17-year-old girl, a top athlete who leads the school's Gay-Straight =
Alliance, told authorities she was the perpetrator of the incidents, =
which included scrawling "die fag" on her car and at school.=20
"The individual's own statements substantiated the evidence previously =
gathered as to the source of the vandalism and annoying phone calls," =
Mill Valley Police Capt. James Wickham said in a press release.=20
Other incidents involved teachers who got threatening phone messages and =
a typed message using anti-gay language that was sent to administrators. =
"Evidence developed during the course of the investigation indicated =
that the student/victim was actually the person" responsible for the =
crimes, Wickham said. "It has been determined that all the incidents =
have been committed by a single individual."=20
The student was not identified by police.=20
Contacted at her home in Mill Valley yesterday, the girl declined =
comment but denied involvement in the case. "I've got to go," she said, =
before hanging up the phone.=20
The girl has been suspended and could face expulsion for filing false =
charges, said Bob Ferguson, district school superintendent, adding =
officials want her to receive counseling.=20
"She confessed to everything," Ferguson said. "She did admit to police =
that it was basically for attention."=20
"The good news is that it validates what we've always thought about our =
student body - the students are very accepting and embracing of =
everyone," Ferguson said. Tam High students "kept wondering how this =
could happen at their school, but unfortunately they were let down by =
one of their classmates."=20
The hoax affected the entire community, he noted. "Not only was Tam High =
under attack, but the entire Tamalpais-Mill Valley community was under =
attack," Ferguson added.=20
Ferguson confirmed the girl, a top wrestler, was withdrawn by the =
district late last week as the high school's athlete of the year. A =
Marin Athletic Foundation dinner honoring top athletes from local high =
schools is scheduled Monday.=20
Both Wickham and Marin County Sheriff Sgt. Mike Crain said they were =
closing their joint investigation and referring the case to the Marin =
County District Attorney's office for review. The student was not =
arrested.=20
"We are confident that the person responsible has been identified," =
Crain said in a separate press release yesterday.=20
Chris Holleran, principal of Tamalpais High, said that students will =
have the opportunity to receive counseling about the matter starting =
next week.=20
"You want to give students a chance to talk about these things," he =
said.=20
Paula Pilecki, executive director of San Anselmo's Spectrum, a lesbian, =
gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy group, was surprised that police =
released a statement on the matter.=20
"It is unfortunate that this information is being released to the public =
in this manner," she said. "The next few weeks will no doubt be =
difficult for everyone involved, and I hope the community reacts with =
compassion."=20
In a series of incidents stretching back to November, the student =
claimed she was the target of hateful language, with anti-gay epithets =
scrawled on her car and on her school locker, and a typewritten letter =
sent to her home. She said she was pelted with eggs outside her home by =
an unknown assailant.=20
On April 12, five teachers at the school - some of whom are gay - =
received threatening voice mail messages from an anonymous caller, and =
"fag class" was found on the classroom door of a lesbian teacher. =
Adminstrators also found "die fag" written on the wall of Keyser Hall =
and received a typed message that used anti-gay language.

Aside from a single kid doing something dumb, you might expect
something was wrong - the location is in a very liberal part of
California near San Francisco. Mill Valley is just across the Golden
Gate Bridge.
I guess girls will be girls. :-)

But the hoaxes were the result of one person. That is why this is a
news item. It is rare. Gay bashings are so common they most often
won't even make the local papers.
With your headline you tried to deceive your readers into thinking
that hoaxes were common.

Here's the biggest HOMO-HOAX of all times:
New Details Emerge in Matthew Shepard Murder
Killers Talk About Crime That Shocked the Nation
Henderson &McKinney
In an exclusive interview with 20/20's Elizabeth Vargas, Russell
Henderson, left, and Aaron McKinney talk about the 1998 slaying of
Matthew Shepard. (ABC News)
Nov. 26, 2004 — Six years ago, on a cold October night on the
outskirts of Laramie, Wyo., 21-year-old gay college student Matthew
Shepard was brutally beaten, tied to a fence and left for dead. He was
found 18 hours later and rushed to the hospital, where he lingered on
the edge of death for nearly five days before succumbing to his
injuries.
The story garnered national attention when the attack was
characterized as a hate crime. But Shepard's killers, in their first
interview since their convictions, tell "20/20's" Elizabeth Vargas
that money and drugs motivated their actions that night, not hatred of
gays.
While Shepard lay unconscious in a hospital, the national press
quickly arrived in Laramie. Cal Rerucha, who prosecuted the case, told
Vargas the media descended on Laramie "like locusts."
"We knew in the newsroom the day it happened, this is going to be a
huge story, this is going to attract international interest," said
Jason Marsden of "The Casper Star-Tribune."
"I remember one of my fellow reporters saying, 'this kid is going to
be the new poster child for gay rights," he added. News of Shepard's
death sparked reaction overseas and demonstrations across America.
"I think a lot of gay people, when they first heard of that horrifying
event, felt sort of punched in the stomach. I mean it kind of
encapsulated all our fears of being victimized," said writer Andrew
Sullivan, a prominent gay rights advocate.
But as the push for gay rights found new force, so did a corresponding
backlash from anti-gay opponents who came from out of state to grab a
piece of the media spotlight.
Tensions were so high that Shepard's father wore a bulletproof vest
under his suit when he spoke at his son's funeral service.
"The saddest part of this whole case was at Matthew's funeral, when
they, these people, refused to let Matthew be buried with dignity,"
said Rerucha. "I never saw people that could hate so much."
Killers Both Receive Two Consecutive Life Sentences
Local residents Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, both 21 at the
time, were charged with Shepard's murder. Henderson's case came before
the court first. To avoid the possibility of receiving the death
penalty, he pleaded guilty to murder and kidnapping and received two
consecutive life terms in prison.
McKinney's case went to trial a year after Shepard's death. He was
convicted of felony murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping. Before
the jury was about to decide his sentence, he, too, reached a deal
that allowed him to avoid a possible death penalty. Both men are
serving double life sentences in prison.
Authorities asked "20/20" not to disclose the prison location.
While McKinney and Henderson admit to killing Shepard, both men — and
the man who prosecuted the case — now say the real story is not what
it seemed.
Many area residents were shocked that the crime was committed by two
young men from their community. But both McKinney and Henderson came
from classically troubled backgrounds.
Henderson was born to a teenage alcoholic and raised without a father.
He says he saw his mother being beaten up by a series of boyfriends,
some of whom also assaulted Henderson.
McKinney's childhood, too, was less than picture-perfect. His father,
a long-haul trucker, was rarely home and eventually divorced
McKinney's mother, a nurse who later died as a result of a botched
surgery. McKinney received a malpractice settlement of nearly $100,000
after his mother's death. He says he spent most of that money on
things like cars and drugs.
McKinney admits to Vargas that by the time he was 18 he had a serious
methamphetamine habit.
Shepard Haunted by Own Difficulties
Despite his strong family life, Shepard had troubles of his own. His
mother, Judy Shepard, says her son's problems had started three years
earlier during a high school trip to Morocco, where he was beaten and
raped.
"It made him pull within himself. He became withdrawn, depression,
panic attacks," she said.
Some of Shepard's friends say he was still a troubled young man when
he enrolled at the University of Wyoming in the fall of 1998.
Tom O'Connor, known as "Doc," who ran a limousine service and
sometimes drove Shepard, said just days before Shepard's death, Matt
told him he was HIV-positive and was considering suicide.
One of Shepard's college friends, Tina LaBrie, was concerned that
Shepard's depression might be somehow connected to involvement with
drugs. "He said 'Everywhere I move, it seems like I get sucked into
the drug scene,'" LaBrie told Vargas.

<P><SPAN class=3DarticleBody> 'Victim' fabricated stories, police =
say A=20
rash of gay-bashing incidents at Tamalpais High School was the work of =
a=20
student gay leader who claimed she was the victim of hate crimes, it =
was=20
disclosed yesterday. </P>
<P>The 17-year-old girl, a top athlete who leads the school's =
Gay-Straight=20
Alliance, told authorities she was the perpetrator of the incidents, =
which=20
included scrawling "die fag" on her car and at school.=20
<P>"The individual's own statements substantiated the evidence =
previously=20
gathered as to the source of the vandalism and annoying phone calls," =
Mill=20
Valley Police Capt. James Wickham said in a press release.=20
<P>Other incidents involved teachers who got threatening phone =
messages and a=20
typed message using anti-gay language that was sent to administrators. =
<P>"Evidence developed during the course of the investigation =
indicated that=20
the student/victim was actually the person" responsible for the =
crimes,=20
Wickham said. "It has been determined that all the incidents have been =
committed by a single individual."=20
<P>The student was not identified by police.=20
<P>Contacted at her home in Mill Valley yesterday, the girl declined =
comment=20
but denied involvement in the case. "I've got to go," she said, before =
hanging=20
up the phone.=20
<P>The girl has been suspended and could face expulsion for filing =
false=20
charges, said Bob Ferguson, district school superintendent, adding =
officials=20
want her to receive counseling.=20
<P>"She confessed to everything," Ferguson said. "She did admit to =
police that=20
it was basically for attention."=20
<P>"The good news is that it validates what we've always thought about =
our=20
student body - the students are very accepting and embracing of =
everyone,"=20
Ferguson said. Tam High students "kept wondering how this could happen =
at=20
their school, but unfortunately they were let down by one of their=20
classmates."=20
<P>The hoax affected the entire community, he noted. "Not only was Tam =
High=20
under attack, but the entire Tamalpais-Mill Valley community was under =
attack," Ferguson added.=20
<P>Ferguson confirmed the girl, a top wrestler, was withdrawn by the =
district=20
late last week as the high school's athlete of the year. A Marin =
Athletic=20
Foundation dinner honoring top athletes from local high schools is =
scheduled=20
Monday.=20
<P>Both Wickham and Marin County Sheriff Sgt. Mike Crain said they =
were=20
closing their joint investigation and referring the case to the Marin =
County=20
District Attorney's office for review. The student was not arrested.=20
<P>"We are confident that the person responsible has been identified," =
Crain=20
said in a separate press release yesterday.=20
<P>Chris Holleran, principal of Tamalpais High, said that students =
will have=20
the opportunity to receive counseling about the matter starting next =
week.=20
<P>"You want to give students a chance to talk about these things," he =
said.=20
<P>Paula Pilecki, executive director of San Anselmo's Spectrum, a =
lesbian,=20
gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy group, was surprised that =
police=20
released a statement on the matter.=20
<P>"It is unfortunate that this information is being released to the =
public in=20
this manner," she said. "The next few weeks will no doubt be difficult =
for=20
everyone involved, and I hope the community reacts with compassion."=20
<P>In a series of incidents stretching back to November, the student =
claimed=20
she was the target of hateful language, with anti-gay epithets =
scrawled on her=20
car and on her school locker, and a typewritten letter sent to her =
home. She=20
said she was pelted with eggs outside her home by an unknown =
assailant.=20
<P>On April 12, five teachers at the school - some of whom are gay - =
received=20
threatening voice mail messages from an anonymous caller, and "fag =
class" was=20
found on the classroom door of a lesbian teacher. Adminstrators also =
found=20
"die fag" written on the wall of Keyser Hall and received a typed =
message that=20
used anti-gay language.</P></SPAN></FONT></DIV>
