Interrogation deal is faulted
'This is terrible legislation that should not be enacted'

WASHINGTON //
Several attorneys and human rights advocates complained yesterday that
the Republican compromise on CIA interrogations of terrorism suspects
in secret prisons would not end abuses.
The deal reached between the White House and three key GOP senators
Thursday leaves the door open for the CIA to employ the same techniques
that it had feared could result in war crime charges against its
interrogators, said attorney Eugene Fidell of the National Institute of
Military Justice.
"This is terrible legislation that should not be enacted," he said.
"It's going to give a free pass to interrogators for past conduct and
for the future ironically creates only more fuzziness in areas where
the drafters claimed to be creating clarity."
