Bible Study - Peter's 2nd Letter about the 2nd Coming of Christ and this
Earth
<> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> (2 Peter
3:1-13 WEB)
This is now, beloved, the second letter that I have written to you; and
in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by reminding you; (2) that
you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy
prophets, and the commandments of us, the apostles of the Lord and
Savior:
(3) knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking
after their own lusts, (4) and saying, "Where is the promise of his
coming? For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things
continue as they were from the beginning of the creation." (5) For this
they willfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth
formed out of water and amid water, by the word of God; (6) by which
means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished.
(7) But the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have
been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and
destruction of ungodly men.
(8) But don't forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the
Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (9) The Lord
is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is
patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should
come to repentance.
(10) But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which
the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be
dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are in it
will be burned up.
(11) Therefore since all these things are thus to be destroyed, what
manner of persons ought you to be in holy living and godliness, (12)
looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, by
reason of which the heavens being on fire will be dissolved, and the
elements will melt with fervent heat?
(13) But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new
earth, in which dwells righteousness.

What does Peter say there? Let us have a closer look...
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
1.) Peter reminds *all* the Christian believers (see 2 Peter 1:1-4) to
remember the words by the holy prophets of the Old Testament, and to
remember the words of Jesus Christ. (That is in 2 Peter 3:1-2)
2.) Peter warns of mockers *in the last days* (so he is obviously
talking about the last days of the earth). They will point out that
Jesus promised to come back but did not do yet. They will also point out
that *the fathers (the generations before - sic!) have waited in vain,
and nothing has changed*. Exactly that is the situation nowadays. Some
people even think that Jesus came back 70 A.D. already, but these verses
prove these ideas wrong. (That is in 2 Peter 3:3-4)
3.) Peter reminds the believers that the people in Noah's times did not
believe God would destroy the life on earth with water, and yet the
flood came. (That is in 2 Peter 3:5-6)
4.) He tells the believers that this world that was created with water
by God's Word (comp. Genesis 1:1 - 2:7 and John 1:1-18) will only exist
as long as the Lord wants that. He can destroy it any time again. (That
is in 2 Peter 3:7)
5.) That day there will be Judgement Day, the end of the heavens and the
earth "that now are" (that is when Peter wrote that letter, namely
*before 70 A.D.*) will have come, and the earth will be destroyed by
fire! That is in 2 Peter 3:7)
[Has this world been destroyed by fire already? From
where do you take that?]
6.) Peter reminds the believers that God's standards of time are not the
same as ours. So a "generation" can mean many thousands of years for
him. (That is in 2 Peter 3:8) This is his explanation and comfort why
"this generation" then did not see Jesus Second Coming as was promised.
The expression "generation" can be seen as a period of time. The Strong
Numbers of the King James Version defines the word "generation" like
this:
=====start quote=====
H1755
?? ????
do^r do^r
dore, dore
From H1752; properly a revolution of time, that is, an age or
generation; also a dwelling: - age, X evermore, generation, [n-]ever,
posterity.
=====end quote=====
So if we replace "age" with "generation" here, it explains what is meant
by Matthew 24:34, "Most assuredly I tell you, this generation will not
pass away, until all these things are accomplished". Indeed, all the
Christians that have lived on this earth so far have not "passed away",
which means "died". They are not lost, because they will have part in
the second resurrection when Jesus comes back: "Blessed and holy is he
who has part in the first resurrection. Over these, the second death has
no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign
with him one thousand years." (Revelation 20:6 WEB)
So where did we stop? Ah, there with 2 Peter 3:8. So let us go on with
2 Peter 3:9:
7.) Peter points out that it is not our right to say that God would not
keep His promise, because He is not bound to time! (That is in 2 Peter
3:9)
[Please see that there is no need to explain why
"this generation" passed away. Peter says that very clearly. If you or
others insist on the fulfillment of this statement, you say that the
Apostle Peter was wrong and you are right. What should one think of
this? If you want to insist on your theory, you will have to give up
Scripture and the Apostles - to make yourself a better one. I do not
think you will manage, and I do not think you are right - like Peter
explaines so well here.]
8.) Peter points out why Jesus' Second Coming takes so long. It is
because God wants many more people to be saved. (That is also in 2 Peter
3:9) [If Jesus had come back in 70 A.D. already, all
the people who were born after that would be lost. Are you lost? You
would be, according to your belief.]
9.) The "day of the Lord", that is when Jesus comes back, will come
surprisingly when nobody reckons with it. (That is in 2 Peter 3:10)
10.) The heavens will burst and the earth and everything on it will be
destroyed by fire. (That is still in 2 Peter 3:10)
[?]
11.) Peter warns the believers to be prepared and live a holy life, so
that God does not have to wait too long for His Second Coming to this
earth. Jesus has not come back because of the chance to find more
believers later. We should also feel warned of the same. (That is in 2
Peter 3:11-12)
12.) Peter explains what the believers are waiting for, namely for the
new heaven and the new earth after the old are destroyed by fire. (That
is in 2 Peter 3:13)
[Which earth is that we are living on here? How old
is it? Would you say it is only 1936 years old??? Has the old earth been
destroyed by fire??? Do we have a perfect body already??? Is there no
pain and suffering on this earth anymore??? Is there no more death on
this earth??? That is exactly what you claim if you insist on a Second
Coming of Christ in 70 A.D. So please give your errors up, or you are
denying Scripture, Jesus' and the Apostles' words there. They all say
the same or explain how to interpret difficult parts.]
What this new heaven and new earth can be read in Revelation. God
allowed the Apostle John to have a look into the future there:
<> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><>
I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first
earth have passed away, and the sea is no more. I saw the holy city, New
Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready like a bride
adorned for her husband. I heard a loud voice out of heaven saying,
"Behold, God's dwelling is with people, and he will dwell with them, and
they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.
He will wipe away from them every tear from their eyes. Death will be no
more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more.
The first things have passed away." (Revelation 21:1-4 WEB)

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
Well, what can we learn from all the above from the Apostle Peter?
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
<> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><>
(2 Peter 3:14-18 WEB)
(14) Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things, be
diligent to be found in peace, without blemish and blameless in his
sight. (15) Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; even as our
beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote
to you; (16) as also in all of his letters, speaking in them of these
things. In those are some things hard to be understood, which the
ignorant and unsettled twist, as they also do to the other Scriptures,
to their own destruction.
(17) You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware
lest, being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from
your own steadfastness.
<>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <><
13.) Again Peter warns us to live a life without guilt and with a good
conscience. Peter says that the patience that Jesus has with us can be
our chance, namely to be prepared better for the day of the Lord. (That
is in 2 Peter 3:14-15)
14.) Peter refers to the letters of the Apostle Paul's who warned of the
same, and points out that the letters are not always easy to understand
(as they are not always for us tofay, either, I think). (That is in 2
Peter 3:15-16)
15.) Peter explains that the difficulties are a reason why people who
are still lacking knowledge and those who are not really firm in their
faith twist much of God's Word and falsify it, which will be their ruin.
(That is in 2 Peter 3:16)
[That can be seen here in the usenet very well. But their interpretation
cannot stand a check against Scripture.]
16.) Again Peter warns not to believe the false teachers whom he calls
"the wicked". We shall be on the watch! (That is in 2 Peter 3:17)
So, who do you believe?
I for one believe in Jesus and His appointed Apostles.
17.) Last not least, I want to join the Apostle Peter with his words to
the believers, for I cannot say it any better:
<> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><>
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen. (2 Peter 3:18 WEB)

I will append a short form of the post above here for better learning -
yes, we are to learn what Scripture is about like the Christians in
Beroea:
<> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><>
The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea.
When they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these were
more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word
with all readiness of the mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see
whether these things were so. (Acts 17:10-11 WEB)
<>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <><
Knowing Scripture is the only way to recognise and expose false
teaching, and we should be careful not to fall into the devil's trap who
loves to distort God's Word.
