But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus...1Co 1:30 |
and not by some pompous act of the will which claims of itself...
' I made a decision for Christ. '
Paul carefully teaches in 1 Cor. chapter one that the salvation of
those chosen for it were done by an act of God and not because of some
good work of decision making on the part of man.
salvation is unconditional. it is not based on anything in man or
coming from man as the verse above so aptly states... " By His doing
you are in Christ Jesus "... not... " by your doing you are in Christ
Jesus. "
Paul goes on to say that... " I thank my God always concerning you,
for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus " ( v. 4 )
man has nothing at all to do with salvation for he is all together
passive in God's grace towards him or grace is no more grace if you
work for it.
" God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with
His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord." ( v. 9 ) not " you are faithful "
for man in his unregenerate state of being does not seek for God
( Ro. 3:11 ) is of the same nature as the devil in his state of being
( Joh. 8:44 ) and is in the snare of his father the devil at his
fathers will. 2 Tim 2:26
man's only hope is in an election based on the will of God.
Paul continues with making it perfectly clear that the grace of God
comes from God... that God does not require men to do something for
God first so that His grace will then take effect...( Acts 13:48 )
that would be salvation by good works...
" that no man should boast before God. But by His doing you are in
Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and
sanctification, and redemption, that, just as it is written, " let him
who boasts, boast in the Lord. " ( vs. 30,31 )
the boast which says " I did it... I chose Christ " is that ugly old
heresy of salvation by good works. it seeks to put the emphasis on
man's doing rather than on God's doing in Christ, as the apostle to
the Gentiles explains in 1 Cor. chapter one.
why would anyone claiming to be saved by unmerited favor all the
while be praising himself for some decision he has made which elected
him ?
very simple... to get the boast of self salvation.
just look around at the names some of these posters use. it's easy
to see who the God haters are by the names they choose. it's easy to
see who the pompous so called ' Christians ' are by the names they
choose.
these love to boast in some good work they've done to merit grace.
but thanks be to God that receiving Christ is " not by the will of
man " ( Joh. 1:12,13 )

But in 2 Corinthians 5:10 he says:
"For we must all appear before the jugment seat of Christ, that each one may
receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether
good or bad."
And James 2: 17 says:
"Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."
and also in James 2:21 we read:
"Was not Abraham our father justified by works? You see then that a man is
justified by works, and not by faith only. Likewise, was not Rabab the
harlot also justified by works? For as the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without works is dead also."
And Peter 1:17
"The Father, who without partiality judges according to each one's work."
