Can Christians and Atheists Coexist? |
It may seem like atheists and Christians cannot coexist, since their views
on reality are so different. One has to see it to believe it, and the other
has to believe it to see it.
But I think that Christians and atheists just have to different and valid
perspectives of the same reality.
Atheists know that when the body is gone, the person does not exist in the
truest sense of the word. That is true, because how can one fully exist
without a body,
even if a spirit in some sense?
And Christians know that the spirit continues after death; they just do not
know that the continuation is not a full state of being alive.
After death, we exist, and yet we do not exist.
No wonder Christians and atheists are able to coexist in the work world.
The ironies of life.

We have coexisted for over 2000 years now. Some times we didn't get along
real well and attempts were made by the atheists to wipe out the Christians
and there was an attempt by the Catholic Church to wipe out atheists, but
overall we have gotten along amazingly well all considered.

Hello,
Actually, the Bible says that there is no conscience existence after death.
Ec 9:5,
"For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they
have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten." (NIV)
Also notice Ps 146:3,4,
"3 Do not trust in princes, In mortal man, in whom there is no salvation. 4
His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; In that very day his thoughts
perish." (NASB)
Thus according to God's word (not men's word), dead people "know nothing"
because their "thoughts perish". (It is kind a hard to think about things,
without any thoughts, isn't it) They simply do not exist anymore.
So then, does the Bible uphold the atheists beliefs in this? Not at all. The
Bible gives out a hope for those who have died and cease to exist. Notice Ac
24:15,
"and I have the same hope in God as these men, that there will be a
resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked." (NIV)
Yes, God will bring back the dead ones again, so that they will be able to
have thoughts again, etc. Even today, when you pop in an old movie starring
a person now dead, say Humphrey Bogart, you can actually see his real image,
as well has hear a reproduction of his real voice. But God can go much
further. He can bring back the PHYSICAL being, complete with all his
original personality etc.
Remember, Jesus called God's word "truth". Thus true Christians must go by
the "truth" of God's word, not the teachings of men. (also see 2 Ti 3:16)
Sincerely, James

I think this is answered by the simple fact that they DO coexist.

No. Having a "different perspective" about reality is being wrong
about reality. To that extent non-relativists can all agree.

They are two different points of view. After death we exist in the sense of
being
"there," but we do not exist in the sense that we no longer can affect our
outcomes or the world any more...for the time being anyway. There's not
much you can do when you are likely not known any more.

We have and we will continue to do so, because superstitious man will never

There's ways to have different perspectives and yet still be right. I can
say a giraffe is a large animal, because it's tall. Another person can say
it's a small animal because it's so light relative to it's height. I could
say the sun is moving across the sky and someone else say the earth is
rotating. ALL things are relative to something else and thus there can be
many perspectives on things.
After death, we exist, and yet we do not exist.
It's either one or the other.
I will exist on as memories in others but not as a seperate entity.

"Does the giraffe exist?" Well, I'm thinking of a giraffe right now. Does
that "giraffe" exist? Some would say it exists as a thought in my mind.
Others would say since there's no physical entity, it does not. Others would
say that it does exist as a physical entity as the section of my brain that
is doing the thinking of it. so no, there is no "one right answer." Now if
you start getting more and more specific with the question, then you start
approaching closer and closer to "one right answer" but there's still room
for discussion. I.e. if the question was "Does the giraffe exist as a
physical entity?" then that would have eliminated the "giraffe as thought"
existence but not narrowed down the other two.

I was one of them myself, kinda hard to forget, actually, it is because I
remember, that I said what I had, what may surprise you, is that many, if
not most, of they who were former Christians, had received salvation, as I
had, and are already under convection to return to the fold, (as God will
not let go of they who are His, He never gave up on me, and kept His Word,
which brought me back, even while I was throwing {figuritively, and
sometimes literally} the bird at Him)...
Thing is, the more Christians, without realizing it, interfered (thinking
they were witnessing for God) with what God was doing in my life, the more
angry and hateful I got, it was *after* I joined the Navy, and got as far
away from testifying believers, as one could get, that God had me all to
Himself, and caused me to return !
Don't get me wrong, the friends and family which I "escaped", never stopped
praying... Pray for them, and let go, and let God (Have some faith that He

Try as I may, unlike you, and a few others, I have not yet learned to master
the ability of mind reading...
To lie is to state something ones *believes* (which is in the mind of the
speaker) to be untrue, with the *motive* (another thing in the mind of the
speaker) of deception.
Now, I would consider the idea that Ray may be *wrong* about some things, or
may have opinions which I do not agree with, but until I can read minds, I
can't claim that he *lies*.

Fundamentalists of all varieties can only coexist with their own kind.
Truer words have rarely been spoken. :-)

Have to disagree - sorry.
Here's a fundamentalist who coexisted with others:
Galileo - almost the ultimate fundamentalist - coexisted not only with
the Vatican, but the inquisition. He kind of had to.
Science *is* fundamentalism, or it isn't science. It's religion, not
fundamentalism, that is the problem.

Don't Bogart that joint, dude.

Christian = There is a God.
Atheist = There is no God.
Sorry, they can't both be valid.

Sorry, they can't both be valid.
In a way, God's existence does have to be proven for him to fully "be
there."
Every being requires to be known to fully exist.
This goes under the assumption that one has to fully be in order to truly
be.
So in a sense, the atheists are right.
God will one day be known, however, and then he will finally be, the way he
wants to fully be. It will be kind of like being in heaven for the first
time, relatively speaking, even for the Almighty, which is kind of like
just starting to exist.
See Revelation 12 for illustration of the child that gets caught up to
heaven.

That's a rather absurd semantic distinction. What exists exists; what
is not known to exist is treated as though it does not.

Don't you think that the gods sometimes get lonely?
When they are forgotten, they are hardly gods at all.
