Catholic schools offer free education
Jun. 17, 2006 at 7:00PM
Catholic schools in New Orleans have started using a tuition-free
pre-kindergarten program to lure displaced by Hurricane Katrina
families back home.
The program uses state money to pay tuition for 4-year-olds whose
parents meet certain income requirements. There are 1,500 slots at 11
Catholic schools in Jefferson, Orleans and St. John the Baptist
parishes, the New Orleans Times-Picayune said.
To be eligible, a child must be 4 years old by Sept. 30 and have
received all age-appropriate immunizations. Participating families must
have a household income that is less than 200 percent of the federal
poverty level and live in the same parish as the program their child
attends.
Parents may register at the school they want their child to
attend. They should take the child's birth certificate and immunization
records, Social Security card, proof of residency, driver's license or
a utility bill that contains the parent's name and address and proof of
income such as a tax return or pay stub.
Registration began last week and will continue until all of the
slots are filled.
