CHALLENGE TO CHRISTIANS --was:Re: Plea for Life |

QUOTE (James D. Andrews @ Feb 8 2004, 05:58 PM)
In conclusion I write, I am on death row; and since I arrived I became a
bona fide Christian. Therefore I am now forgiven for my sins and justified
in Jesus. To my Christian brethren, prosecutors, judges and legislators I
ask, why not lobby for my life to be spared now that I am in Christ as
vigorously as you lobbied for my life to be terminated when I was a child
of
the Devil?

The man says he's a Christian, and he's called upon you Christians to spare
his life.
Don't ask for the church to plead your cause,
they have NO POWER in these modern times to do much for anybody. You're
going to have to ***** your own row, to prove to society you're worth
saving.
It's true, the church has no power, let's see if it can do something so
small as this:
I CHALLENGE CHRISTIANS, to dig deeply within those offering plates which are
so eagerly collected every Sunday Morning, and pay the costs of a simple
correspondence course where the man can get an education and prove himself
worthy of society's mercy.
Small challenge, for an institution which rakes in billions each year.

Educating Inmates is Worth the Investment
By State Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles
http://www.seattlepress.com/article-9751.html
Here's something else to think about: It costs about $25,000 to jail one
inmate for one year. In contrast, it costs only $1,000 on average to
educate
an inmate for a year. And if correctional education helps prevent former
inmates from committing more crimes, that means fewer victims - which
means
less suffering for our fellow citizens and less money spent on
enforcement,
prosecution and incarceration.
Building more prisons and jailing more people has not deterred crime, as
evidenced by a recent U.S. Justice Department study. On the contrary,
recidivism rates increased by 5 percent during a time when our national
prison population doubled. I believe that continued investment in
education,
particularly post-secondary education, is the fiscally and socially
responsible alternative. One of the bills I have been working on would
prevent the elimination of educational programs that are cost-effective in
reducing recidivism. I have also been working to increase offenders'
access
to on-line learning, including secure ways for inmates to use our state's
K-20 Educational Telecommunications Network, a high-speed
telecommunications
backbone that enables the use of the Internet and videoconferencing in all
of Washington's public educational sectors.

This seems to be a very important issue to you. So, do all you can to "make
a difference". Don't challenge Christians to do it for you. You are tying
prison reform in general to the (possibly) valid plea of a convicted killer
to escape death. I don't want the guy out of prison every again. So, even
if he is spared death, I couldn't care less if he gets a college degree.

Don't know about most states but Tenn. offers everything from courses
to help inmates achieve their GED(high school equivalency) to heating
and air conditioning, to hair styling to accounting and business
management. In one prison in Tiptonville it is referred to as a
"campus" and the school is the largest building on site and has
facilities that most colleges would be envious of. Inmates are paid
for doing their jobs and are allowed some cash from outside. They are
allowed to order merchandise as well as have bank accounts. Most have
TVs, cd players etc in their cells. It is a medium security prison
for low risk inmates(ones that for one reason or another are not
considered dangerous or flight risks.) Their are several convicted
murderers in the population.
Inmates at the State Correctional facility in Memphis are allowed to
attend college classes at the neighboring Southwest Tenn Community
College(formerly State Technical Institute At Memphis). When I was
there taking Electronics Engineering I met one "convict" that was
serving a 20 year sentence and was working on his 3rd associates
degree, paid for by the state. Most of the state facilities here have
similar programs.
All that being in mind, why would a church want to get an inmate a
correspondence course?

If they are lacking in the basic skills just how do you expect them to
get a higher education? From your own statements at would appear
those you have contact with need to work on their GED first. Again
you deliberately seemed to hjave skipped over the part about the
College that inmates are allowed to attend to get DEGREES. The man
mentioned in the previous Post had two degrees in Computer Science and
was working on one for Biomedical Engineering. That high up enough
for you or do you prefer they get a Doctorate from Vanderbilt?

You see, you're on usenet, and you must make "an argument" for sake of an
argument.. showing off, playing the devil's advocate... GRAND STANDING. Your
argument is pure bologna. I remember Keith from Texas writing how difficult
to even get an aspirin for a headache... I remember days ago a man in
discussion who had his foot and leg turning black, and denied an X-Ray, and
you're saying they're getting access to a quality education?? GRAND STANDING
FOR YOUR AUDIENCE ON USENET. Even if your reasoning is botched, and the
argument doesn't hold water in reality --- you've got to make that big
argument to make everybody think you're in_the_know, and I'm just a silly
bimbo bleeding heart liberal.
Well, I'm not wasting time on your posts any more... people can look up the
stuff on the internet and find out just how bad things really are.
I think what needs to be done by the government, is making sure children are
given an education BEFORE they end up in the prison system. Here in NC our
teachers are some of the lowest paid in the nation. I would like to see
teachers paid what they're worth for a change... among many things that need
to be done to overhaul the entire education system, both for children, and
adults like those in prison. Kids who slipped through the cracks in the
system, sometimes not even learning to read and write... ending up behind
bars.
Tax Dollars you say? You'll pay them --- in law enforcement, in welfare
checks, in prison facilities and maintenance.
Or, you can educate people, giving their life purpose and an opportunity to
fit into society.
I can see Governors all over America overwhelmed and impressed when John

those you have contact with need to work on their GED first. Again
you deliberately seemed to hjave skipped over the part about the
College that inmates are allowed to attend to get DEGREES. The man
mentioned in the previous Post had two degrees in Computer Science and
was working on one for Biomedical Engineering. That high up enough
for you or do you prefer they get a Doctorate from Vanderbilt?
Never mind, you have no interest in education yourself, therefore not in
a
position to speak, so SHUT UP.

<Snipped> rambling Diatribe
You seem to have a problem with tradesmen. Funny how you elitists
that all claim to be for the "working man" thumb your noses at those
same folks. What do have against electricians, plumbers or hvac
mechanics to name a few? I know HVAC mechs that make in excess of
$70k per year yet you act like we are all a bunch of low paid non
educated trash. I know Truck drivers that make in excess of $150K per
year. Personally I'm a Level III NICET certified Engineer. Guess
that's hard for you to comprehend yes? Since I'm a lowly tradesman I
guess I'm supposed to be getting drunk somewhere and making minimum
wage.
It is quite apparent that either you know nothing of what you speak or

point(which you choose to ignore as it apparentl;y doesn't suit your

education then the next you complain that they don't get Law Degrees
handed to them. Sounds like you just want to ***** and I rained on
your little parade. It is quite obvious that you wish to know nothing
of anything positive being done by anyone. When given links proving
that the State of Georgia (where the original subject is incarcerated)
has educational programs for inmates you post something about
defficencies in Idaho that have nothing to do with the inmate in
question.
BTW: You are the one that is grandstanding with your CHALLENGE TO

Give a man a good, solid education, and it's a little harder to throw that
life away, because they can contribute to society. THAT is what I'm saying.

I hear there's an upcoming execution in California today. I was asked to
send this email, so I'm doing that now. I do not know Kevin Cooper, or what
crime he's been charged with, but I will say it's disfortunate that a man's
life is thrown away so easy in a nation as rich as America. Not to fault the
governor of California, but this man's life could have been used for some
thing productive and purposeful, if even within the prison system. It's
unfortunate some have fallen so far through the cracks in society, the end
up like this. I don't believe it must be like this.
I was asked by the sender below to write. My word isn't going to change any
thing. I simply hope that my opinion is shared with the governor --- like
one Senator has stated recently, education can deter these things.

Here's something else to think about: It costs about $25,000 to jail one
inmate for one year. In contrast, it costs only $1,000 on average to educate
an inmate for a year. And if correctional education helps prevent former
inmates from committing more crimes, that means fewer victims - which means
less suffering for our fellow citizens and less money spent on enforcement,
prosecution and incarceration.
Building more prisons and jailing more people has not deterred crime, as
evidenced by a recent U.S. Justice Department study. On the contrary,
recidivism rates increased by 5 percent during a time when our national
prison population doubled. I believe that continued investment in education,
particularly post-secondary education, is the fiscally and socially
responsible alternative. One of the bills I have been working on would
prevent the elimination of educational programs that are cost-effective in
reducing recidivism. I have also been working to increase offenders' access
to on-line learning, including secure ways for inmates to use our state's
K-20 Educational Telecommunications Network, a high-speed telecommunications
backbone that enables the use of the Internet and videoconferencing in all
of Washington's public educational sectors.

By Hedy
Please forward as widely as you can. Kevin Cooper is scheduled
to be executed tonight. . International pressure is mounting to
stop this execution. Please, this is urgent. Kevin is running out
of time... We need to act quick.
Killing people is against the biblical laws saying: Thou shallt not
kill. Love your enemy, Bless those who do you wrong.
All this and more is part of the constitution under freedom of
religion. However, in religion and politics, both the same thing,
everything seems to be the opposite.
As we know from history and today we see religious people
murdering each other continuously under the evil guidance of
religious and political leaders, and George Bush is great at that
with his gang. Nevertheless, let us confront them with their evil
wrong doings and demand that they respect these laws of theirs.
The Hedy Parcherie is not against the death penalty, but she
does not support ambiguous laws. This shows why we must get
rid of the religious or dogmatic laws of the USA and put in place
Hedist laws, which are laws based on science, love and
harmony.
Register with the Hedy Parcherie today for a totally different world

California death row prisoner Kevin Cooper is scheduled to be

what you can do to help!

Kevin Cooper will be executed on February 10--Tuesday-

Pressure has building as activists from around the country have
taken action to save Kevin. Requests for clemency have come
in from all over the world: Rev. Jesse Jackson and Gov.
Schwarzenegger's priest held a press conference on the steps of

On Friday, Schwarzenegger released a statement denying
clemency. One thing that people can do from around the country
is help us clog up the phones lines, fax lines and e-mail in the
governor's office--to call on Schwarzenegger to stop Kevin's
execution. Let Governor Schwarzenegger know that their are
many discrepancies in the case against Kevin Cooper--so much
so that four of the jurors in Kevin's original trial have called for his
execution to be canceled or delayed.
The date of Kevin's execution is set for February 10, so our time
is running out. Let's do all we can to send a loud voice to the
new governor from all corners of the United States--that we think
he should do the right thing and grant clemency to Kevin!

Engineering.
Chemistry.
Electronics... Physics... to name a few.
Heating and Air?? What's that show on TV about the shoe salesman, and people
laugh at him, for his lack of a professional job?
How many of your inmate buddies got Bachelor or Master Degrees in prison?
A PhD in Heating and Air you say?
How many can even get access to decent legal representation?
Before you blather about "how good things are"... do some research.
Here's another piece of irony, (I love America, and I support law
enforcement), but there's some Federal Judges that are quitting/stepping
down/resigning, because of the law...
There's problems. And people like you are too cowardly, too arrogant, and
too blind to admit it.
http://www.issues-views.com/index.php/sect/25000/article/25072
We learn further that, upon quitting the bench, Judge Martin claimed that he
no longer wanted "to be part of our unjust criminal system."
These provisions, says Martin, deprive judges of the power "to consider all
of the factors that go into formulating a just sentence."
