Minneapolis, MN -- A newborn is expected to survive after oxygen ignited
inside a special hood he was wearing at Mercy Hospital and fire burned
nearly a fifth of his body.
The baby, Maverick Thomas was born three weeks premature at Mercy Hospital
Monday night.
A hospital statement says the baby, who was just 12 hours old was wearing
the oxygen hood over his face for additional oxygen, when something caused
the gas to ignite. It says nurses who were with the baby immediately put out
the fire. The baby's head, shoulders, part of his face and the tops of his
hands were burned.
An attorney for the baby's parents says the family isn't thinking about
legal action right now.
The baby was in an open-topped bassinet under a warmer when the fire
happened. He is now in neonatal intensive care at Hennepin County Medical
Center in Minneapolis.
In a statement Wednesday, Allina, which owns Mercy Hospital located in
suburban Coon Rapids, Minnesota, called the fire "a highly unusual, isolated
incident."
Meantime, several agencies continue to investigate the fire, including: the
Coon Rapids Fire Department, the State Fire Marshall, the Minnesota Health
Department and the Food and Drug Administration, which monitors medical
devices.
Maverick is now being treated at Hennepin County Medical Center in
Minneapolis.
