" And if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose
for yourselves today whom you will serve:
whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the
River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but
as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." Jos. 24:15

offered as a proof text spoken to prove the free will of man to
choose serving the Lord or not, this verse, taken out of context, is
just more proof to the contrary...
that serving God in Spirit and in Truth is not what those in
darkness are about to do since they are spoken of as being of the same
nature and purpose as their father the devil. Joh. 8:44
in the context of Joshua's farewell address to the Israelites he is
offering them a choice between serving two sorts of demon worship, as
in v.15
they seem to be whole hearted in their choice instead; to serving
the Lord, when it is recorded in v. 24... " We will serve the LORD our
God and we will obey His voice."
this is not the case at all as Joshua erects a large Stone ( a
Semitic symbol of Jesus Christ ) as a witness to this covenant.
v.24,25
the history of the Iraelites from the day of their freedom from the
Egyptians to this day is marked by outward rebellion against their own
Messiah. the Psalmist recounts the theology of the Iraelites in
Ps. 106 noting the wide difference between the remnant chosen by grace
( vs. 1-5 ) and the rest of Israel who are in rebellion against God.
( vs. 6-46 ) except for the remnant chosen by grace. vs. 47,48

Apostle Paul declares " Not however that the Word of God has
failed, for not all those of Israel are Israel;
nor because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children. But,
"In Isaac shall your Seed be called."
That is, not the children of the flesh are children of God; but the
children of the promise are counted for a seed. "
Ro. 9:6-8
while those who know not the Scripture nor the power of God present
false witness against Christ in a gospel of decision making for the
forgiveness of sins, so did the Israelites of Jos. 24 profess
obedience to God all the while they were not the children of the
promise.
their actions proved that they offered mere lip service because of
the fear they had in the curses of the covenant. ( vs.19, 20 ) just as
Joshua knew in his heart they didn't mean what they were saying...
" You cannot serve Jehovah, for He is a holy God. "
Joshua knew full well that so called ' free will ' just pays lip
service. he knew full well that the greatness of God's majestic power
evokes " feigned obedience " in the non-elect, ( Ps. 66:3 ) but joyful
thanksgiving in those chosen by Sovereign grace. Ps. 66:1-3b

free will is not taught in Jos. 24... " feigned obedience " is.
