CHRISTIAN DUTY
To Read: Zechariah 4-6
To Know:
"I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise
and to the foolish:." (Rm.1: 14)
"Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Lord Acton's dictum
has become a cliché. Many who believe themselves wise to separate God from
the government would freely quote Acton. They do not know that his plea was
to secure the place of religious duty in a free society. Acton also said,
"Liberty is the highest political end of man, but no country can be free
without religion. It creates and strengthens the notion of duty. If men are
not kept straight by duty, they must be by fear. The more they are kept by
fear the less they are free." Governments cannot create freedom, they can
only curb crime. It remains true that they govern best who govern least. The
removal of the Bible from our society has set Americans on a crime spree and
forced the government to do its main job of building prisons.
Paul had a religious duty. The grace of God placed the former enemy of Jesus
Christ under obligation to tell the world what the Lord told him. No matter
who you are or where on earth you live Paul the apostle of Jesus Christ has
something that belongs to you. He had the knowledge of God's saving plan.
Without this knowledge every guilty man or woman is without hope. Paul knew
the gospel and was not at liberty to decide for himself whether to withhold
this knowledge from the world. Thus he writes, "I am under obligation both
to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish." (Rm.1:
14)
The gospel of Jesus Christ is the most valuable commodity on earth. Gold and
glory will both tarnish. The gospel will shine ever more brightly as time
goes on. The gospel is eternal life. Jesus said, "This is eternal life that
they may know you the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."
Not to know Jesus is never to know the purpose for which we were created.
Not knowing Christ is a manifest sin. Paul's duty was to make God's
salvation known. It is our duty too.
