Object: Christians who give up on planet Earth
The New Three Cent's Worth Column deals with the fact that many Christian
preachers are "giving up" on earth, and condemning the world as naturally
evil and against God. Read this insightful column and make up your own mind.

Very good and logical arguments.
I especially like the arguments for gun ownership by law abiding people.
In the days when every man carried his sword he was able at least to
defend himself.
Criminals, especially in Britain, are able to take advantage of the laws
that prevent decent people from carrying arms.
If they kill they are NOT penalised even when caught.....
By penalised I mean put to death - and that summarily.
Our legal system defends the life of the murderer and does nothing to
protect the man in the street.
We are told in Britain that we cannot defend ourselves in our own homes if
broken into unless we match the violence of the usurper with an equal or
lesser violence.
The rights of the normal, law abiding citizen are not equal to the rights
of the violent criminal.

There's nothing new about this. Most Christians believe that earthly
experience is tainted. The idea of "original sin", remember?
Though Jesus never taught that. No surprise there, though: Most Christians
prefer to ignore most of the teachings of Jesus and focus on the rest
of the Bible even against His wishes.

Part of the reason why Christians are complacent is that they think we are
living in the end times and they are going to be raptured out.

Yeh. But they are just going to die and then be born again on the planet
they trashed among deadly enemies they made because they thought that
death was an escape from all responsibility. Hit and run living.

It doesn't, but the Christians who think this way go at it like this:
1. Christ is coming *soon*
2. When Christ comes, the only ones left will be lost forever. Why give
them anything?
3. When Christ establishes His Kingdom, He will heal the earth.
So go ahead, rape the planet! It doesn't matter. Get yours now and
stick whoever is left behind with the droppings.
Anne Coulter said this: "God gave us the earth. We have dominion over the

As a Christian, I find this notion of stewardship to be reprehensible, but
people cling to it. Why else would people be willing to dump their trash
along the side of the road? Why would they be so against environmental
regulations that promote clean air and water?
Ahh well.

Raymond,
I'm suspicious of quote-mining, no matter who does it.
However, if you are using the Colter quotation as a statement
about how some Christians feel, then I think she says it well.
I do have to wonder, though, what timeline these folks have.
Jimmy 'What, me worry?' Watt expressed this idea during the
Reagan administration. It's now 20 years on, and the same folks
are saying the same thing about living in the last days. Folks
have been saying the same thing, on pretty much the same
evidence, since the first century.
Maybe, just on the off chance that the end times aren't really
predictable, we ought to do as that monk (St. Francis?) who,
when asked what he'd do if he knew the Lord was coming that day,
said, "I'd continue hoeing my garden".

Raymond,

I'm suspicious of quote-mining, no matter who does it. However, if
you are using the Colter quotation as a statement about how some
Christians feel, then I think she says it well.

Generally I am suspicious of quote-mining, too. And I appreciate the
cautionary note. However, it *sounds* like her. Her articles are so full
of venom!
But I will see if I can search out the original and present it in context.

I do have to wonder, though, what timeline these folks have. Jimmy
'What, me worry?' Watt expressed this idea during the Reagan
administration. It's now 20 years on, and the same folks are saying the
same thing about living in the last days. Folks have been saying the
same thing, on pretty much the same evidence, since the first century.

You are right.
I remember some time after I got saved, there was a "wave" of excitement
about the Lord coming. My whole family got caught up in it. This was in
1976. The preachers were so *certain*. Prophesies were described and
appeared to fit so well!
And it didn't happen.
One thing occurred that helped, though. A missionary from the
Netherlands, Cornelius Vanderbreggan, took me aside. I had only been
saved for three years, and being young in the faith I was easily
impressionable. But he said that he had seen many of these episodes
where people were sure the Lord was to return almost immediately, and
that while the Lord *might* return at any moment, it could be another 30
years, 40 years, or even another 2000. The important work for a
Christian was to represent Christ in the best way possible until He comes.
That steadied me. Then again in 1984, there was another significant wave
of certainty about the Lord's return. People did not understand why I
was not as excited as they were. Of course, they didn't say anything
about not being right. I have seen these waves periodically since then,
including 1999, 2000 and 2001.

Maybe, just on the off chance that the end times aren't really
predictable, we ought to do as that monk (St. Francis?) who, when asked
what he'd do if he knew the Lord was coming that day, said, "I'd
continue hoeing my garden".

Tom McDonald

I'd say he was right. And I don't think the end times are predictable.
Some of the nicest people I knew got caught in the hubbub. Some learned
from their experience. Some didn't.

Raymond E. Griffith

This "Raptured out" concept is a false one anyway and
breeds this type of attitude, which can even go as far
as trying to help war along, to bring on the supposed

Rapture is just a modern word meaning to be called away, the coming
resurrection of the 'dead' as in 1Cor.15 & 1Thes.4:13-18
