ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Police are investigating the stabbing of two women at a
Rocky Mount church that left one dead and the other hospitalized.
Authorities believe a man charged into Lakeside Baptist Church Thursday
morning and stabbed the women, who were both Meals on Wheels volunteers.
Witnesses said he was trying to rob them.
Officials said 58-year-old Debbie Kornegay was pronounced dead at Nash
General Hospital. Eve Beasley was taken to Nash, then transferred to Pitt
County Memorial Hospital in Greenville where her condition and age were not
immediately available
Police believe the attacker fled the scene in a 2002 charcoal gray GMC Yukon
XL that belonged to one of the victims.
Residents who were visiting City Lake, the city park across the street from
the church, on Thursday morning were asked to contact police with
information related to the incident, according to the Rocky Mount Telegram.
Children at a nearby preschool were picked up by their parents or taken to
the YMCA in Rocky Mount, the newspaper said.
The newspaper said the culrpit was described as a black man in his late 20s
or early 30s. He is about 6 feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds and was
wearing a white T-shirt, dark jeans and a T-shirt wrapped around his head.
The suspect also may have tatoos on his arms, the paper reported.
