C.S. Lewis on Matthew 24:34 |
Say what you like, we shall be told, the apocalyptic
beliefs of the first Christians have been proved to be
false. It is clear from the New Testament that they
all expected the Second Coming in their own lifetime.
And, worse still, they had a reason, and one which
you will find very embarrassing. Their Master had
told them so. He shared, and indeed created, their
delusion. He said in so many words, 'This generation
shall not pass till all these things be done'. And he
was wrong. He clearly knew no more about the
end of the world than anyone else.
It is certainly the most embarrassing verse in the Bible.
Yet how teasing, also, that within fourteen words of it
should come the statement, 'But of that day and that hour
knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven,
neither the Son, but the Father'. The one exhibition
of error and the one confession of ignorance grow
side by side.
To this, the skeptic may reply, If Jesus incorrectly
predicted His return within the contemporaneous
generation, but actually did not know that He was
going to return within that time frame, then why
did He so confidently assert that all of the words
He had just spoken would come to pass in
Matthew 24:35? He said, 'Heaven and earth shall
pass away, but my words shall not pass away'.

Ok.
Have you read "In Search of C S Lewis" edited by Stephen Schofield (Bridge
Publishing Inc, New Jersey) and containing interviews with A J P Taylor,
Malcolm Muggeridge and others who knew Lewis? It seems C S Lewis told dirty
jokes all his life ... and there was his constant habit in later life of
urinating in his pants ...and staying in them.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF A CHRISTUS OBNOXIUM
.... quoting from James Barr's book "Fundamentalism" on the three
distinguishing features of the Fundamentalist:
'Firstly, a fundamentalist has a very strong emphasis on the inerrancy of
the Bible, and believes in the absence from it of any sort of error.
Two, a strong hostility to modern theology and to the method, results and
implications of modern critical study of the Bible.
And three, an assurance that those who do not share their religious
viewpoint are not really true Christians at all.'

Jesus: "For the time is coming, and is now," used three times in the Gospel
of John to elucidate the dualism (from Jesus' present perspective) of His
sayings, in both the immediate context (from Jesus' perspective) and future
context (from our perspective), all of which, when coupled with their Old
Testament contexts, establishes Triunism, i.e. there is what "was," what
"is," and what is "yet to come."
Joh 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is,
when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear
shall live.
(Said in reference to Matthew's limited resurrection that took place at
Jesus' crucifixion, and the rest of the New Testament's references to the
future resurrection, all of which are still future.)
Joh 16:32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be
scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not
alone, because the Father is with me.
(Said in reference to the scattering of the disciples in Jesus' hour, and
the coming scattering of the disciples in the end of the age.)
John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall
worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to
worship him.
(Said in reference to the end of temple worship in Jesus' immediate time
frame, and in the end-time frame.)
When all is said and done, if it was "coming," it wasn't "now," and if it
was "now," it wasn't "coming," unless it was both "coming" and "now" in
different contexts, i.e. the near future and the far future.

Yeshua was SPEAKING IN ARAMAIC.....He said "sharbata" which in this
context, means "TRIBE", Not "generation".
These kind of passages can be cleared up, and the correct meaning be
given, but ONLY if one understands that Messiah was speaking in His
native tongue, Aramaic.
So, He was saying; "This tribe shall not pass away, till all these
things be done".
And we still have Judah (the Jews) with us till this day.
This is the explanation, understanding that Messiah spoke in Aramaic,
NOT in Greek!
