ETERNAL REFRESHING.—But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall
give him shall never thirst, but the water I shall give him shall be
in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. John 4: 14.
MEDITATION.—Christianity is the religion of sunshine, because it
assures us that the roots of our being are nourished by eternal
springs. Happy is the person that trusts God and whose heart is
anchored in him. He is like a tree planted by the river of waters; the
roots of which have playing around them the refreshing of everflowing
rivers. It is derisively remarked that an optimist is blind in one eye
and sees poorly with the other; therefore, he does not see the world's
shams and shames, its hardships and injustices. But he that speaks of
the "tree planted by the rivers of waters" was not blind in one eye,
nor poor of sight in the other. He was all sight and insight. He had a
vision of the times that almost stunned him. What he saw shocked and
shook him. He was exultant, not that he saw less than others but
because he saw more than they. He was such because the roots of his
being were saturated with infinite power, and he knew that nothing,
however strong, could foil the work of God. Paul said, "I live, and
yet not I, Christ liveth in me." We, too, live and move and have our
being in God, and he lives in us. If in this day our sorrows are less,
our burdens eased, it is due to the fact that the roots of our life
are nourished by the springs of eternal love. At the center of our
life is God.
SUGGESTION FOR PRAYER—We owe our highest, unceasing praise and love to
thee. O God, thou art the author of our being, the supply of all our
need. Made in thy image, endowed with immortal powers, our highest aim
should be to glorify thee and enjoy thee forever. May we regard the
trust of these exalted gifts of soul, mind, and body—with becoming
reverence and sacredness.
HYMN.-- Thou my lasting portion,
More than friend or life to me,
All along my pilgrim journey,
Saviour, let me walk with thee.
SCRIPTURE READING.—John 4: 5-15
************************************************************************
These daily devotions come from an old book by Rev. Washington Bryan
Crumpton, 1842-1926. The book is called DAILY DEVOTION and was first
published in 1923 by the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist
Convention.
This book is now extremely rare. These daily meditations are copied
exactly from a precious copy the Lord led me to. There are no other
copies known to be available in an in depth search of the Internet,
although Rev. Crumpton wrote other books, one of which, ADVENTURES OF
TWO ALABAMA BOYS, can still be obtained for hundreds of dollars, or
can be downloaded free from the internet.
More information on W.B. Crumpton, including a picture of himself and
his brother, can be found at this URL:

A search of google.com will also glean tidbits about the role of Rev.
Crumpton in the history of the Southern Baptist church.
May you find as much joy, comfort, and love in these old fashioned
devotions as I have. God bless you all.
Love,
