Daily Message for Creationists |
From "Things Creationists Hate"

Supernova 1987a
This was an important astronomical event that was observed on the Earth
in--guess when--1987. The supernova is 169,000 light years away, and lies in
the dwarf galaxy called the Large Magellanic Cloud, which can be seen from
the southern hemisphere. That means the explosion happened 169,000 years
ago. But that can't be possible if the universe is only 6K years old, so
pick your favorite creationist "explanation":
* the universe is way tinier than astronomers say it is
* the speed of light has changed
* God created the light of the supernova within 6,000 light years of
Earth, so that it falsely "reveals" an "event" that never really
happened

No, that won't work either. There is an expanding bubble of light from
the original flash that was reflected off nearby dust clouds whose
diameter can be measured. This shows that the speed of light at the
time was exactly the same as it is now.

Or that the object is much bigger (and therefore further from us) and
thus the light still took 170,000 years to reach us.

Paradoxically, most real events are highly improbable.

To all you anti creationists,
Genesis 1;3-31 is not discussing the original creation of matter or the
heavenly bodies. It describes the preparation of the already existing
earth for human habitation. This included creation of the basic kinds of
vegetation, marine life, birds, animals and the first human pair. All of
this is said to have taken place in six days. However, the Hebrew word
translated day has a variety of meanings, including 'a longtime; the
time covering an extraordinary event.' Old Testament Studies, 1978, W.
Wilson, p.109. The term used allows for the thought that each day could
have been thousands of years in length.
From a true believing Christian.

In the wrong order. Trees were not made before fish, nor were birds
made before beasts of the field.

Make the length of a day anyting you want. The order given in
Genesis 1 is still wrong. It's a Mesopotamian myth, not history.

That's one of Christianity's main problems: too many 'true believers'
who claim their sect has true belief and that of their fellow
Christian isn't. How do you expect the unbeliever to be persuaded when
you can't even persuade each other?
