"Dateline NBC's" unnoticed "Achilles Heel?"
Even though the overtones of entrapment are unsettling, pretty
much everyone, myself included, recognizes that "Dateline NBC" has
been performing a valuable service to society with its continually-
running "To Catch a Predator"series. (Probably hasn't done any harm
to NBC's ratings, either, as a fringe benefit to the network.)
But here's the funny thing. I noticed it from the start, but it
crystallized more and more, the closer I scrutinized that which we've
seen and heard of the transcripts of the online conversations between
the predators and the decoys who've been setting them up...
...and if the predators were to think about it, they would NOT go
to the supposedly underage girl's house, and thus would NOT be
arrested -- for lack of that vital follow-through step.
Watch closely, next time you see the show, and you'll see it for
yourself.
The online decoys are NEVER pro-active. Never! Not unless
that happens in some part of the transcripts that we don't get to
see or hear.
The girls answer the questions that they predators ask, and they
act cool and coy -- but they never SUGGEST doing any sexual act.
To discover whether or not they're being set up, the predators
would need to do nothing any harder than ask this ONE simple
question of the supposedly underage girl on the other end:
-- "What would you enjoy doing if I came over?"
...and see if she described or suggested a sex act.
Or...
-- "What kind of sex would you like to have with me?"
I might be wrong about this, but I'd BET decent money on the
likelihood that the decoy CANNOT answer those questions, OR
proactively suggest having sex, without stepping over the line of
perpetrating legal entrapment! And thereby blow the entire caper
on their part with that potential perpetrator, right off the bat!
It would be interesting to see a response to this observation and
conclusion thus derived, from the "Dateline" producers.

Title: The GLARING OMISSION on "Dateline NBC's" "Predator" series: ENTICEMENT. 07 Oct 2006 06:22:09 PM
[[[ READERS... after I posted the observations, below, yesterday,
I realized that it could have been stated in fewer words. The
potential predators who are being set up by the "perverted
Justice" folks and the cops could easily avoid being arrested
by simply being savvy enough to realize that a necessary
element of the sting was the ABSENCE of ENTICEMENT.
Evidently, if the "Perverted Justice" decoy on the chat line
were to overtly *suggest* having sex, or *invite* their marks
to have sex, that probably would constitute entrapment.
It's amazing that people smart enough to be rabbis, doctors,
and computer engineers aren't savvy enough to NOTICE that
omission, while having the conversation. ]]]

On the other hand, you'd probably get busted just for asking such a
question to a minor online anyway.
