A mother of three was found dead inside a burning mobile home early Friday
morning in a rural Alachua County mobile home subdivision, according to the
Alachua County Sheriff's Office.
Alachua County Fire Rescue crews found the body of Wende Pierce Ellinger,
35, on the floor inside the fully engulfed double-wide mobile home at 10207
SW 84th Ave. in the Kanapaha Highlands subdivision, according to a news
release from the Sheriff's Office.
Firefighters pulled Ellinger from the burning home and pronounced her dead
at the scene.
Later Friday afternoon, neighbor Ralph Wright looked on from his porch
across the street as detectives and forensics investigators combed through
the charred remnants of the blue stucco-covered mobile home, surrounded by
yellow tape.
Outside the blackened home, a bicycle lay in a ditch and a plastic toy chair
sat in the front yard. Wright said that shortly after midnight, he saw smoke
from his front bedroom window and woke his wife, Linda, and had her call
911.
"I grabbed the fire extinguisher and ran over to the front of the house, but
the flames were heavy in the living room," Wright said. "There was nothing I
could do."
Wright described Ellinger as a good, quiet neighbor and said he has never
seen anything suspicious at the home where Ellinger has lived for at least
five years.
He said the children did not live with Ellinger, but visited often. They
were not home at the time of the fire.
Linda Wright said her daughter, who lives down the street often baby-sits
Ellinger's children. Her daughter's children were friends with Ellinger's
children, she said.
"She was a nice girl," Linda Wright said of Ellinger. "She didn't throw late
night parties and she's always been a good neighbor."
Detectives are conducting a death investigation and are awaiting autopsy
results to determine whether the cause of the fire and Ellinger's death
resulted from an accident or foul play, said Sgt. Steve Maynard, a spokesman
with the Sheriff's Office. The medical examiner will most likely release
autopsy results Monday or Tuesday, Maynard said.
