It has been a deadly weekend on Central Florida roadways.
The Florida Highway Patrol late Saturday was investigating a single-vehicle
crash south of Sanford in which one person was killed. The vehicle was found
in a wooded area near Myrtle Street and Tortuga Trail after one occupant
used a cell phone to call for help.
The man was unable to tell Seminole County Fire Rescue dispatchers his
location, but they were able to triangulate the signal from his phone to
pinpoint the location. Rescue workers had to free him. The other occupant
was dead.
In a Saturday afternoon crash, a 37-year-old Orlando man was killed while
riding a motorcycle he purchased just minutes earlier, according to Orlando
police.
Derell Willis, 37, was heading east on Lee Road near Edgewater Drive just
after 1:30 p.m. when he lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into a
utility pole, police said. Willis, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to
Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he died.
A head-on crash early Saturday in the north Volusia County community of
DeLeon Springs claimed one life.
Jose Zerdel-Perez, 44, of DeLeon Springs was killed in the crash on U.S.
Highway 17 at Citrus Street, FHP Trooper Kim Miller said.
Zerdel-Perez drove his 1994 Saturn south in the northbound lane, Miller
said.
All three occupants of a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle that hit the Saturn
were hurt, including a 3-year-old in critical condition. The child, Eric
Paulino, was in the back seat, but was not in a child-restraint seat, Miller
said.
A motorcycle rider was killed earlier in a crash at Ridgewood Drive and
Harbor Drive in Daytona Beach, but no information was available.
Meanwhile, the FHP released the name of a motorcycle rider killed Friday
night on John Young Parkway in south Orange County. Troopers said Brian A.
Dobbins, 23, of Sarasota, died at Florida Hospital Kissimmee, where he was
taken after the 10:35 p.m. crash.
And the FHP said a Toms River, N.J., woman died Thursday when the van she
was in made a U-turn in front of oncoming traffic.
Joanne Thorson, 68, was killed when an eastbound 1998 Plymouth van driven by
Richard Thorson, 67, also of Toms River, turned on U.S. Highway 192 into the
path of a westbound 1999 Ford Explorer driven by Oliver Overton-Morgan of
the Kissimmee area.
