Day of the Lord - Part 1 |
The subject of the "Day of the Lord" is dealt with
in three parts.
1) Was the destruction that Jesus spoke of
world wide?
2) What are the "stellar events" that Jesus spoke of?
3) What does the "Day of the Lord" mean?
This is "Part 1" and in it, we will deal with the
question of whether or not the destruction that
Jesus spoke of, was a world wide event, or a
local event.
I know that people have been taught about a world
wide destruction. But if you examine the Greek,
you will find that the NT does not speak of the globe,
but of "the land", or "a region". Bad translation is
what has the English Bible's saying "world". Look
for example, at Luke 2:1.
"And it happened in those days that a decree went
out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should
be taxed." - Luke 2:1
Now do you really believe that Caesar taxed the North
American Indians and made them journey over to be
taxed by him? :) Common sense tells us that it
couldn't possibly mean the entire planet. :)
The Greek word behind it is, "oikoumene", which means,
"land" and specifically, "the Roman Empire". And it is
this Greek word and another ("ge") that is used in the
NT and yes, there was a difference. When Jesus spoke
about "the foundation of the world" in Matthew 13:35,
which was obviously the planet He was speaking about,
the Greek word is "kosmos", which does mean the globe.
"That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the
prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables;
I will utter things which have been kept secret from
the foundation of the world (kosmos)." - Matthew 13:35
And "kosmos" is NOT the word used when speaking
about the destruction that was coming during the
tribulation in any of the NT writings.
Even here, Christ was not speaking of the planet...
"And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man
in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth
mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming
in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory."
- Matthew 24:30
The word used there, is "ge" and it means simply,
"soil; a region". It is not speaking of the whole
planet and this is further proved, by looking at
another one of the words in the passage, which is
"tribes". Take a look at it. The word is "tribes".
The Greek word there is "phule" and it is consistently
used in Scripture to note the tribes of the Jews.
Note here, that James uses it in the same way and
there is no doubt that he is writing to the dispersed
Jews of the various tribes...
"James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad,
greeting." - James 1:1
What Jesus is noting here, is a local event. Local to
Jerusalem and Judea. Isn't that what He said in
Luke 21, which is the parallel account to Matthew 24?
And doesn't He say that that event would be the
fulfilling of what was written about it?
Luke 21:20-22
20) And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with
armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.
21) Then let them which are in Judea flee to the
mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it
depart out; and let not them that are in the countries
enter thereinto.
22) For these be the days of vengeance, that all things
which are written may be fulfilled.
But what of the whole planet seeing Him return?
Well first of all, when Acts 1:9-11 is quoted ("in like
manner"), it must be noted that only those standing
there saw Him and not the whole world, so when
they say that we will all see Him return, because
Acts 1:9-11 says, "in like manner", that can't be true,
since those passages show that only those standing
there saw Him leave and it must be noted that what
it actually says, is that a cloud received Him, "out
of their sight". Thus, they didn't actually physically
see Him leave. They saw a cloud. :) So it would be
a contradiction to say that the whole planet must
see Him return.
And what of Revelation 1:7? Doesn't it say that
every eye will see Him?
Well, first of all, I'm going to leave a lot of this
for the "Day of the Lord" post (Part 3), so I won't
go into it all here. But since this is also part of
the world seeing Him subject, let us look there
and see what it actually says, as far as whether
or not the planet is being described...
"Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye
shall see him, and they also which pierced him:
and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because
of him. Even so, Amen." - Revelation 1:7
First of all, the word translated as kindreds is,
you guessed it... "phule". :) This is noting the
tribes of the Jews, which is how this word is
always used in Scripture!
Secondly, the word translated as "earth" (and
remember, we don't correct the original writing
with the translation, but rather, the other way
around), is actually "ge" and again, means a
region, not the planet.
The word for the planet was used by the writers
of the NT and they did know the difference. And
our doctrines do not correct Scripture! It is the
other way around! And if we begin to claim that
they just didn't know any better, then we are saying
that we know better than those who walked with
Jesus and spoke to Him and that God couldn't
keep His word straight! I for one, do NOT want
to be in THAT camp! :)
The word for the planet is "kosmos", as I said
and it is used often in Scripture. For example,
read Mat 4:8; 5:14; 13:35,38, etc., etc..
In fact, many times in translations when it says
"world", or "earth", it isn't that at all. Look at
the KJV in Matthew 24:3. The Greek word
there is "aion" and means, "an age", not the planet.
Compare other translations and you'll see that
most of them translate it as "age".
Anyway, Revelation 1:7 says that the tribes in that
region would see Him return, not the whole planet.
The whole planet could not see Him physically
return anyway, since the planet is round and there
would be what's called a "line of sight" issue.
And if someone says that He will project a vision
of Himself, then have they not just left the physical
literalism that they claim is there? :)
I do not believe it is a physical seeing of Jesus
Himself anyway, but again, that is for Part 3
of this series ("Day of the Lord").
So as far as Jesus said, this was to be an event
that occurred in Jerusalem and in Judea and
not the whole planet. THAT'S ALL HE SAID!!!
I did not post this to start an exchange, but I will
discuss it with anyone who wishes to remain polite
and stay on point, responding to what I have said
and if they can, disputing it by dealing with what
I stated above and not snipping it and ignoring it
and then accusing me of their tactic of doing that.
Anyone who wishes to insult, or ignore what I have
brought up above, I will just ignore.

scripture which depicts "resurrection," or the defeat of Satan.
Then you will want to compare these scriptures with all scripture which
includes the term "the day of the Lord" (see "the day of God" too) and
compare the description of the events included in the prophecy with the
seventh trumpet and resurrection.
Why depend on someone else to tell you what to believe, when you have
His word in your own hands?

I know that many are being taught a false doctrine of the Church
going through the wrath of God. That is not consistent with the
days of Noah or Lot. Noah did not get soaked and Lot did not get
toasted.
The "day of the Lord" should NEVER be confused with the rapture
of the Church. To do so is a very serious and grievous error. The
rapture of the church is something for the Christian to look
forward to, but the "day of the Lord" is another matter.
Amos 5:18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what
end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not
light.
The "day of the Lord" is a terrible judgment that will come AFTER
the rapture of the true Church.
Isa 2:12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every
one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted
up; and he shall be brought low:
Isa 13:6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall
come as a destruction from the Almighty.

How could these verses above be referring to the coming of the
Lord to be united with His true Church? No brightness in it!
Yet the coming of the Lord for the Church will be a glorious
moment for the real Christian (and interesting "news" for the
denominations to read about).
1 Th 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord,
that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord
shall not prevent them which are asleep.
1 Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a
shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of
God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1 Th 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up
together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air:
and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
1 Th 4:18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
Notice the contrast between the rapture that the saint is to look
forward to, and be comforted by, and the "day of the Lord".
Amos 5:18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what
end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not
light.
See? The "rapture" and the "Day of the Lord" are COMPLETELY
DIFFERENT EVENTS.

He is only voicing his opinion. Which we are all doing. That is why we have
these discussions. Are these statements you have really necessary. Gossip is
Murder We ALL must remember that. I admit, I too struggle with this. We need
to keep our opinions focused on scripture Ananias is slammed more then

That's a good point, that if someone is proposing the kind of doctrine
it speaks of in 2 Timothy, the correct response, is to shun it: to beg
off. People who go and try to tackle atheists, and the like, on their
own terms, are just exposing themselves to the corrupting influence of
false teaching, and throwing pearls before swine. If someone doesn't
want to hear about God, and the gospel, from the Bible, then move on to
someone else, and don't corrupt yourself, and waste time and resources
that might otherwise be invested in people who do want to hear it.

If we are to believe his earlier posts, where he stated that he was
apparently in his mid 30's when he "officially" became a "pastor" (which
occurred sometime after his prison-based "ordination"), then adding on
another ~6 years since that time, would give us a figure somewhere in the
vicinity of 40 years in the flesh.
I was in prison over 20 years ago. But you aren't far
off. It's on the plus side of it though.
