BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A suicide bomber on a bus in Baghdad killed at least
30 people and wounded 25 others Thursday, police said.
The bus was packed with passengers traveling home for the weekend,
authorities said.
It was headed to Nasiriya and was leaving the al-Nahtha terminal near the
Kindi hospital in southern Baghdad when the explosion occurred about 11 a.m.
(3 a.m. ET), police said.
Nasiriya is a Shiite city about 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of the
Iraqi capital.
"I was standing near when the blast happened," one man told Reuters as he
stood in front of the mangled wreckage of the vehicle.
"I saw only seven or eight people wounded and all the remaining people
inside the bus were killed."
In August the bus station was the scene of a horrific triple car bombing
which killed at least 43 people and wounded 89, The Associated Press said.
Officials have warned attacks could increase as Iraq's December 15
parliamentary elections draw closer.
On Tuesday, a suicide attack on a police academy in eastern Baghdad killed
40 Iraqis and wounded 70. Two suicide bombers were involved in that attack.
