Object: DEFINITIONS ARE IMPORTANT :: "BABYLON"
Definitions are Important :: BABYLON
Definitions are always important. Without agreeing on the meaning of the
terms used in a discussion, reaching an agreement, or even basic
communication of ideas, is just not possible.
Yes, George Bernard Shaw wrote, "In crowded populations, poverty
destroys the possibility of cleanliness."
Actually, "poverty" and "cleanliness" are not "things" which Exist.
Since "poverty" is not a literal physical Thing, it cannot act, or
cause, something else which does not literally exist to cease from
existing. Still, we understand the use of "poetic license," and the use
of metaphors and symbols, and we all know what Mr. Shaw means.
We all use words in various degree of meaning; sometimes we do speak in
a metaphor, sometime we use symbols (all words are symbols) as symbols
and intend a symbolic meaning. Almost always we know, and understand,
what the speaker intends.
When a man tells his boss, "Sorry, the project has crashed and burned"
he does not actually mean (unless the "project" were an actual airplane)
a literal impact and flames.
When a wife tells her husband, "I've got to have a new dress; I just
don't have ANYTHING to wear to Jill's birthday..." the wise husband will
say nothing of the contents of her closet, and just give up the cash.
When an exhausted man drags his body home, he may tell his wife, "work
was a REAL circus today!" Of course she understands that "real" means
some degree of "circus" beyond the normal circus, and not a LITERAL
circus...(unless he works AT a circus, in which case he would have said
"junkyard," or...)
If we understand the metaphors our husbands and wives use, and if we
understand the funny papers; Why, then, do we have so much difficulty
with God's Word?
Still, consider the metaphor "destroy;" and say, that when a beautiful
young woman smiles at a man she destroys (empties his mind) his
concentration. Or; in the middle of a stage play someone laughed aloud,
and destroyed the mood.
So we can agree that we know the difference between "destroy" used as a
metaphor and the literal, definitive meaning of DESTROY, right?
First, there is no historical evidence that Babylon was ever "Destroyed"
by any literal definition of that term. To "crumble with age;" is NOT
"to be destroyed" in the same sense as Sodom. And yes, Babylon did
crumble, it is in ruins.
If you wish to consider the destruction of Babylon a metaphor, then
please explain to me how the symbolic destruction of Babylon resembles
the literal destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Second, consider the questions:
1, Who did God say would destroy Babylon?
2, When did God say Babylon would be destroyed?
3, Because Babylon was NOT destroyed as was Sodom and Gomorrah,
a) Suddenly
b) Completely
c) With fire and brimstone
d) With the Inhabitants
Then how, or in which particular, did the present "ruin" of
Babylon resemble the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah?
Third, consider the signs of the return of the Lord as given in Mat
24:29-31 and included by Isaiah in his description of the destruction of
Babylon.
Then consider the fact that John described the destruction of Babylon,
again, some several hundred years after Ancient Babylon had fallen into
ruin. Why? If the title "Babylon" were to be applied to a modern nation
who's description and conduct matched that of ancient Babylon, then
which nation is Babylon today?

Oh Randy... what was that quote about definitions
not being Biblical? I know you have it quoted from
this idiot. :)
Basically people, it goes something like this...
"Definitions are proof that it is not in the Bible."
According to Glenn, that is. He told another poster
that he was not interested in his "definitions" and
that it was proof that what he was saying is not in
the Bible.
But of course, if Glenn (oldwetdog) gives a definition,
then it is the truth!
Now go ahead Glenn and claim that I'm falsely accusing you.
And then when it's quoted, please go ahead and perform
your normal routine of responding to me again, claiming
again that i am falsely accusing you and saying that what
I posted is proof of that. And then, as usual, point to
your words that I quoted, that prove that you're a liar
and claim that it's proof that I falsely accused you, while
thinking that everyone else is dumb enough to fall for that!
BAWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

The Bible is the inerrant word of the living God!
If you don't believe the Bible, don't tell me that
you are a Christian. I won't believe you. To make
that claim, is to be a heretic who does not know God.
