depression, guilt, and God |
I was listening to a religious talk show in Michigan yesterday (on some AM
channel). I was driving through to get to Ohio. Anyway, they were talking
about how guilt and depression are linked and how to get rid of both. One
man called in and said that he was in his 60's and was guilty and depressed
over what he did when he was a youth (molested some youngsters) and how he
later treated 2 of his wives (cheated on them). Even though he confessed
his sins, he feels real guilty now. He's had a successful life,
financially and is real comfortably off. They kept telling him to
basically pray for God's forgiveness HARDER and to visualize being
forgived, blah, blah. About 10 minutes of psycho-religious blather. He
said he does pray but it doesn't help. I was practically screaming into
the radio "ASK HIM IF HE DONATES A NICE CHUNK OF HIS WEALTH TO GOOD
CAUSES"! But they never asked him; the panel just went on and on about
prayer and the guy's FEELINGS. Other people called with similar stories of
still feeling guilty over bad things they did in their pasts. Never once
did the panel suggest that they gve back to the world (whether it's time or
money), and thus make it a better place, which would go a long way in
reducing their guilt. Follow Jesus' example: give to the needy. Words and
prayers and confessions are really empty unless one actually practices what
they're saying. Deeds are more important than words.
