Major Layoffs for DPS

There has been a startling announcement involving thousands of Detroit
Public School layoffs Thursday. The loss of these positions is certainly a
major blow to the Detroit Public School system. But CEO Dr. Kenneth Burnley
explained that the district's financial budget deficit is just way too deep
to keep things the way they are.
At a time when Detroit Public Schools is facing a $78 million budget deficit
this year, and an anticipated $91 million shortfall next year, it is making
major cuts. The district has sent the sobering news that it will have to
hand out more than 3,000 pink slips in April. The cuts will affect at least
900 teaching positions, and 2,300 non-teaching jobs including central office
personnel, administrators, and support staff.
The district says it will utilize vacancies and attrition to lessen the
blow, but the majority of jobs will be eliminated through layoffs. The
district also says teachers in critical shortage areas will not be affect by
the layoffs, including math, science, English, special ed. and bilingual
education.
In a written news release, Dr. Kenneth Burnley said this was the hardest
decision he has ever had to make in nearly 40 years as an educator.
At a press conference, Dr. Burnley stated, "If we get the $15 million, then
the at risk money we have counted on comes. If we don't get the $15 million
in at risk dollars that we believe the Detroit students deserve, then the
problem is exacerbated."
The pink slips will go out in April, and all the positions will be
eliminated by the end of the school year in June.

There's a simple solution. We'll just send all our kids to India for
school. Probably educate them, give them a straw mattress and a daily
bowl of rice cheaper than we can do it in the U.S. Extra rice if
they put in a couple hours in the evening on a weaving loom. How's that
for a Neocon social program?

accomodations and a top flight education and because it's India, only
costs $2K a year?
