Did Plato know about the Old Testament? |
Hi all,
In response to a question a student of mine asked, I'm trying to learn
how much, if at all, Plato may have been aware of anything from the
Old Testament.
Does anyone here know:
1) if Plato expressly mentions anything from the Old Testament, and if
so, what?
2) if Plato obliquely refers to the Old Testament?
3) where I might find more information about this?
Many thanks.

===>NO. Nothing.

===>You won't. It does not exist.
In fact it was the early teachers of the Church who read and quoted
Plato and other ancient philosophers in THEIR writings.
E.g. In 399, Augustine was elected Bishop of Hippo,
one of the intellectual centers of North Africa.
He was a Neo-Platonist, attempting to combine classical
philosophy with Christianity.
He wrote the book titled "The City of God",
using e.g. the concept of Plato's
"Allegory of the Cave". His book contains
OT material, as well as the history of the Greeks and Romans,
and quotations from Plato, Cicero, Herodotus, Tacitus,
Seneca, Aristotle, etc. He used the concept of Plato's
"Allegory of the Cave"
Hope this helps. -- L.
