OMAHA, Neb. -- A man who admitted to killing his 1-month-old son was
sentenced on Friday morning.

A judge sentenced David Roze to 10 to 20 years in prison. He pleaded
guilty to manslaughter charges in February.

Roze has been in jail since July, shortly after he brought his injured son
to a hospital where the boy later died. Prosecutors said he shook the
baby.

"The doctors have been very firm in their conviction that this was an
abuse case, and in fact, Dr. Demar indicated this was one of the most
serious, most severe injury cases he has seen with multiple types of
abuse," said Sarpy County prosecuto Trisha Freeman.

Roze would be eligible for parole in five years.

"I'm glad we've gotten closure," said the baby's grandmother, Karen
Shalman. "It's been a long, almost year, for my family. I dont' think
justice has been served, but hopefully we can move on with our lives."

Last year in the Nebraska Legislature, a bill was passed to require that
all hospitals and newborn nurseries teach parents or guardians about
shaken baby before they ever take the baby home from the hospital.

The new law is helping shaken baby experts in Omaha prevent similar cases,
according to nurse Mary Vondra, a child abuse consultant currently
developing shaken baby videos for the state.

"(These cases are), almost always, it's inconsolable crying," Vondra said.
"Crying is quite normal, and if you've done the best you can and the baby
is still crying, put the baby in a safe place, and walk away."

Vondra said she hopes to have all training done by Aug. 31 and then the
videos will be distributed throughout the state.
