THINKING GOD'S THOUGHTS
Discipline defined
To Read 1 Samuel 28,29
To Know:
"And she did not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the wine and the
oil, and who lavished upon her silver and gold, which they used for Baal."(Hosea
2:8)
All through the night a giant engine roared away just outside my window. We
were thirty-five thousand feet aloft in a jet aircraft. A single one of
these massive engines could have lifted us out of London and landed us in
Boston. By the time the stewardess passed through the cabin with the evening
meal, the thunderous noise was already out of my mind. My not noticing the
din made me think about the danger of everyday living. God holds this world
in being. How easy it is to put God out of mind. It is as easy as it was to
block out the noise of that colossal jet engine. Had, however, the roar
stopped every one of us on board the craft would have been jolted back to
reality. How often is God out of mind despite the fact that in him we live
and move and have our being?
To Do:
Discipline in the Christian life means taking Christ into account in
everything. Christianity is living in union with the Lord of heaven and
earth. We take the Lord into account by bringing every thought into
conformity with his revealed will.
The Bible defines love as the willingness of Jesus Christ give his life in
order to deliver us from the wrath of God. When Christ was nailed to the
cross those who hammered the spikes were held in existence by the hands they
pierced. He holds us all day by day. We who know him are invited to
experience the power of his resurrection at work in us. Let us not allow the
wonder of who we are in Christ become commonplace.
To Ask:
Father, help me to be always aware that your care for us is present and
powerful in order that I might be at liberty to give all my attention to
what pleases you.
